My Virgin Ears 01.12.09

Katy Perry and her… kitty.

Hello readers!

I’m Jonny, a long-time friend of Rosy’s and new contributor to Accidental Sexiness. I hope to bring a different perspective and add to the variety of content to an already phenomenal blog.  To give you a hint of insight of my background, I’ll be doing this serial post called “My Virgin Ears” giving you a heads-up to the new music that is being released (and eventually overplayed by your “local” radio station) with a brief review from my expert (former radio personality) point of view. If you don’t like it, Katy Perry’s (ahem) kitty… is ready at my command.

  • Akon, Beautiful
    • Akon keeps the hits coming with this Ladies anthem that I’m sure you’ll be singing along to in the car, in the club, in the shower, on the can… you get it. He sticks to his formula and it gets him another hit that I’m sure will be around until the summer. VERY catchy, you’ll eventually buy it if the radio doesn’t burn it in to your brain.
  • Katy Perry, Thinking of You
    • KP makes a pretty solid attempt at showing some depth in her debut album by releasing this predictable pop-ballad (Prom song 2009?) coming off of 2 danceable big hits. The lyrics are pretty immature which is pretty consistent with her 2 previous singles, but the kiddies will eat it up. Ladies, be prepared to have this song dedicated to you by some slacker with no creativity. It’s not a bad song, it just reminds me of a song by (insert any pop star name).
  • T.I., Dead And Gone (f. Justin Timberlake)
    • Timberlake has his fingerprints all over this track, but keeps T.I.’s momentum with another hip hop-ballad on this album that has given T.I. some dimension allowing him to get away from the club hits and stuff that never hits the radio. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t go all JaRule on us and digs himself a hip hop-ballad grave. It’s a pretty sloppy production, but these 2 chart-toppers will keep the track on the air for a while. I haven’t been a fan of T.I.’s new stuff (including this song), but it’s selling pretty well, so I’ll deal with it.
  • Keri Hilson, Turnin’ Me On (f. Lil’ Wayne)
    • Club Hit. This song will be played at pretty much any nightclub with a heartbeat or a stripper. It won’t have much of a shelf life due to its lack of catchiness (actual word) a.k.a. a decent hook, but it may come back to haunt us at summertime. Not worth the purchase, unless you’re actually buying Keri Hilson, which in that case I’ll put in 20 bucks.
  • Kevin Rudolf, Let It Rock
    • For some reason, I really want to like this song but I just can’t. Whoever the producer was that allowed him to rap (using that word VERY loosely) should be shot. It pretty much ruins the song. I’m not thinking his song is going to make it far, but if TV starts using it for promos (which I can totally see happening), it’ll hang out there long enough for him to get another single out.
  • Blue October, Dirt Room
    • Damn good song from BO! It has crossover written all over it, so don’t be surprised if you hear this on your Top 40 station. This may just be as big a song as their first single, Hate Me. It’s got a bit of a Coldplay/U2 feel about it, disguising the lead singer’s subdued vocal range on this track. Definite download.
  • Franz Ferdinand, Ulysses
    • Very cool song from a group that’s dropped off the radio map for a while. Very catchy, but I don’t see it have much of a life on the radio. A few parts are a little out there, but then again it is FF. Great to download, but don’t expect to hear it on the air much.
  • Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, You Better Pray
    • Can you say, Guitar Hero? Great energy in this song, but I don’t think it will carry them too far. They might want to get that next single ready. It is a great follow-up to their first single, Face Down, but not memorable unless you’re already a fan.
Quickies: Mims, Move: Still a one-hit wonder.; The Von Bondies, Pale Bride: Pretty good, but what else ya got?; Hoobastank, So Close, So Far: It’s the Indiana Jones 4 of The Reason; Linkin Park, Leave Out All The Rest: 1 more hit for LP! Not their best, but it’s really good.
