“Thriller” to come back from the dead!

The Nederlander Organization announced officially today that is has acquired the rights to Michael Jackson’s iconic 1983 music video “Thriller” and plans to turn it into a Broadway musical…

“Thriller,” which has yet to acquire the rest of its creative team, will be at least a couple of years away. But Nederlander said that Jackson will be personally and fully involved in the creation of the show.

Let me start off by admitting that I’m a huge MJ fan. I’m sure I still have my Beat It jacket somewhere in storage… As a matter of fact, I had the privilege of being at what may have been his final concert at Madison Square Gardens on September 10, 2001. Unfortunately, we all know what happened the next day. So it goes without saying that I think this is a great idea, and certainly an easy one to put together. I’d also certainly be interested to see how they will modify the storyline of the video to fit a stage production. I just REALLY hope they don’t do some lame reality show tie-in for auditions like they already have with some other screen-to-stage adaptations that shall go nameless. This would definitely be an opportunity for MJ to diversify all he has contributed to our culture and possibly get him out of some his financial mess. I would love to see a stage adaptation of his life story or even one about the Jackson 5, which if this Thriller idea truly gets off the ground, it could certainly set things in place for something like that to happen. From the music video that made them the productions they are today, might this be the next branch of synergy for music artists?
What music video would you like to see as a Broadway play?
