Since the end of season 2 of my favorite comedy Flight of the Conchords, I feared they would not return for a third season. Today, Jemaine Clement, one half of New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo, confirmed they are considering not coming back.

Clement told Reuters that he needs to discuss the future of the show with his co-star, Bret McKenzie, and with the director of the series, James Bobin.

“It very likely might not” return for a third season, Clement said.

“It could come back in a shorter season or like a special,” he added.

With both Jemaine and his partner in crime Bret McKenzie venturing into other projects, there is just not enough time to come up with enough quality material for another season.

Clement, who took flight on a solo career last week starring in a new movie “Gentleman Broncos,” said he and McKenzie are challenged to keep up with the work required for the show.

“We’ve got to write the series, but we’ve also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky,” he said.

Though they make it seem quite easy to spit their rhymes, I’m sure its got to be an arduous task to come up with all that material in such a small amount of time.

Until their final decision, I will keep my fingers crossed!

You can get the music from Season 2 via their latest cd entitled, I Told You I was Freaky.

TBH, I think this is a good thing. I love these guys, and in the tradition of all of the best British comedies (The Ofice, Extras, Faulty Towers), the 2 season approach is the way to preserve that greatness forever. I’ll miss them, but I’ll be happy to see them go out on top.

      Hey Mel,
I agree with you. To be honest, when I met the boys earlier in the year I did express how much I’d love a third season but would be happy how it ended if they chose not to come back.

I like the fact the he at least says they might come back for a special which would be awesome to be able to revisit these characters again who we’ve all come to love.
