At around 8pm GMT the lights went dark at the Brixton Academy in London for the highly anticipated stage return of Barbadian babe Rihanna last night.
She waltzed on to the stage wearing extremely little outfit (a black and silver leotard with a mask over her eyes –it was very erm – cheeky!) She opened up the show with ‘Wait Is Ova’ – very apt and then settled down in to a throne like chair in the middle of the stage for a very dark and sophisticated performance of her new single ‘Russian Roulette’. With a stage full of mannequins and broken TV sets it was all quite reminiscent of the hit Disturbia video. It seems Rihanna has gotten very grown up!
With just a sprinkling of tracks from her new album, Rihanna pleased the crowd by performing many of her hits including ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music’ and ‘Disturbia’ and we saw her give new meaning to the break up song ‘Take a Bow’.
Changing in to a sexy black leather leotard and wielding a samurai shaped microphone she sang ‘Live Your Life’ which the crowd went mad for. But the big event that really got the audience excited was a surprise entry from the one and only Jay-Z! Coming on stage to screams that nearly drowned out Rihanna’s intro to ‘Run this Town’ Jay-Z (wearing shades of course!) did his part in the collaboration. He then went straight in to his part in the opening part of ‘Umbrella’ before hugging Ri-Ri and running off stage, leaving her to finish the show with this massive hit.
Much of the crowd had brought Umbrellas along which they opened up for this moment, something which I’m sure has become quite a tradition at Rihanna gigs. Perhaps interesting to note was that Beyonce was also playing that evening at the massive 02 arena in London and my fellow reporter that was covering her show (i.e an old colleague) said that there was no such appearance from Jay-Z at Beyonce’s gig. Though the power couple did appear at RiRi’s after party held at Mahiki nightclub.
It wasn’t the longest show ever, just 15 minutes shy of an hour, but Rihanna seemed to please her fans, who had been invited along to this free event to promote her new album ‘Rated R’ in conjunction with Nokia’s release of the X6.
What an evening!
Thanks to the fabulous people at Nokia for providing us with tickets to this amazing event!
