How is it possible that people used to confuse Jude Law for a girl? Jude, who was born David Law, changed his name when he enrolled with a youth drama group in London in the 1980s.
He says he had to toughen up because people mistook his name for that of a female and it caused lots of confusion.
He says, “(I was) assigned to the girls’ dormitories and sleeping quarters when I was a teenager and I joined the National Youth Music Theatre. Someone took a look at my name and clearly thought, ‘It has to be a girl.’ How wrong can you get?”
I doubt ol’ Jude minded being assigned to the girl dorms! Plus, on what planet is “Jude” a female name?
If you are in the U.S. you can catch him on The Late Show with David Letterman. These photos are of his arrival at the Ed Sullivan theater in New York City this afternoon.

Wow……you sure do work fast! I too was outside the Letterman stage door today. Jude is yummy!
He was named David Jude Heyworth Law. He’s gone by Jude since he was at least 10. There’s a clip from a London morning show that’s floated around the net at different times, that shows Jude giving a review of 101 Dalmatians; he was 9 or 10 at the time, and they referred to him as Jude.
Yeah Sheryl, That’s what the story is saying. He went by Jude and people thought it was a girl name!
@Bella wow you got to go!! Were you inside for the interview?
No not this time but I live in nyc and got to meet and talk with him when I went to see ” Hamlet”. He autograhed a bunch of photos for me, made some small talk…he was soooo nice.
Oh Bella you are so lucky! Sadly I could not make it to NY to see him in Hamlet. I will have to catch him the next go around. =(
Don’t worry Rosy….one day. He loves nyc. He’ll be back I’m sure. His kids were also having a blast here. I saw them all a few times in the village but didn’t think it was appropriate to approach him with his kids there. Its all about respect….if you want it, you gotta give it.
I agree 100%. There is a time and place for everything. If celebs are with their families they should be respected. Sometimes I don’t even post pictures if they look intrusive.
