This is the year of the Firth! Colin has garnered numerous nominations and acclaim for his role as a gay professor in A Single Man. This evening he was honored as best British actor at the 30th London Critics’ Circle awards in central London.
I have always professed my love for Mr. Firth but I must confess he broke my heart this week. News spread like wildfire on the internet about his feelings about his role as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice fifteen years ago.
He says angrily: “I’m not remotely interested in Pride and Prejudice in any way and haven’t watched it since doing it.
“But the word Darcy is like a phantom that won’t leave me alone, like a school nickname that sticks with you for years afterwards.
“It was as if I hadn’t existed before Pride and Prejudice. I was hailed as a new arrival even though I’d arrived ten years earlier.”
Personally I loved him as Mr. Darcy and nearly all his other roles before and since. It can’t have been that bad since he returned to a similar role for the two Bridget Jones films!
Congrats to Colin and remember, we love you just as you are.

I can tell you from having seen him speak at the SBIFF last weekend that he is *not* in any way “angry” about Darcy. Please do not take anything reported in the Sun as gospel. Colin Firth is a lovely bloke, and he’s very gracious about his “Darcy” roles. And he is very deserving of all the awards and nominations he is currently enjoying.
I wondered if it was just taken out of context. I have always heard such great things about him and I wondered why he would be so mad about his role in P & P?!
This comment was made by Colin at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica on Tuesday night and believe me, he didn’t say it angrily. He said it loudly and forcefully, but just to make an impression. These writers always make a big deal out of nothing. Then it gets picked up by other outlets and becomes something it never was. My biggest pet peeve of all time!
Absolutely agree. I always think he is a classical, refined, polite, articulated, and charming English gentleman. It seems to me the comment is a bit rude and inarticulate. I am confused and I feel kind of disappointed. He earned an international notice for his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in BBC P&P. Is it not true?
Absolutely agree with Rose, by the way.
Hey Cathy,
Please don’t be confused and disappointed. I will be the first to say that many times, bigger media outlets report things having been said in a way that they very well might not have.
I felt just as you did at first but when I read Diane’s comment above I realized that he did not say it the way it was said to have been.
I love Mr. Firth and he just does not seem like the type to say something like this. Especially when he revisited a similar role in Bridget Jones.
