Enter to win a “Dexter” Season 5 Poster

With season five of the Showtime hit “Dexter” inching its way closer, we have some really killer things to share with you! The fab folks at the network want you to adorn your wall with a just released poster like the one shown above.

In addition, we have a new promo to share that will give you a better idea how the season premiere will begin. The show opens with the tears of Dexter (Michael C Hall) and Rita’s (Julie Benz) beloved son Harrison. The sound slightly going out of focus just as the realization of what has happened begins to seep into the mind of the man who could have prevented this.

The cries return with the arrival of the Metro-Dade Police Department who walk into the house, now empty but for a tub filled with the blood and body of a mother, a daughter, a wife and a friend whose life was taken too soon by the serial killer Trinity. Dexter is forced to come to terms with his own selfish actions that directly led to her horrific demise. Now, a single father of three, with his wife’s death shrouded in mystery, how will Dexter deal with both his guilt and grief as well as the enquiring eyes of the FBI?

The biggest question on the minds of many fans is of course, why did Rita have to die? To win the poster, please chime in below in the comments section and let us know how you feel about it. Do you agree with the death? Should it have been handled differently?

Best answer gets the poster! Please make sure you include your Name and contact email address in the spaces provided so that we can let you know you are a winner.

  1. I think the death of Rita was a good thing for the show overall. First of all, with the way the last four seasons have gone I feel that the writing could have started to get predictable. By having Rita die, there is now a whole new dynamic and direction for the show. How will Dexter hide what he was doing pretending to be Kyle Butler. Rita’s murder will be very public and Dexter will get the attention of the press, meaning it will only be a matter of time before Arthur’s family recognizes him as the man who claimed to be Kyle.

Also, how will Dexter explain why he didn’t leave on the trip with Rita? He was going to meet her there, claiming he had “work” stuff to finish up. So what will he tell the police about where he was during Rita’s murder.

On another note, the police/FBI are now going to be looking at Dexter in a way that hasn’t happened since season 2. And on top of that Deb will now be part of the group looking into Dexter (you know she won’t sit it out because of a conflict of interest).

Lastly, Rita’s death added a new dimension to the overall series. When going up against the Trinity killer, yes Dexter “won”…but did he really. Arthur knew that killing Rita was outside his MO, but he did it anyway. Did he do it to draw attention back on Dexter? Was that how he would distract the police while he escaped? Yes, Dexter caught and killed him, but Arthur’s actions have a much longer lasting effect on Dexter’s whole life.

Overall I think we are going to see a whole new Dexter this season. Rita was his mask and now that mask has been removed and could possibly expose him for the monster he is. I think we will get a much more “raw” version of Dexter this season.

    …and besides, Rita was annoying.

  2. Joe Confalone says:

I think rita’s death was great for the show as a whole. This opens numerous possibilities of what can happen from here on out. This could make Dexter sloppy, and he can get caught. It could make him out for revenge and have his dark passenger overtake the goodness in him. Or (as many of the previews have shown) make him feel guilty. I think a major move like this needed to be made for the shows progression, because if everything was perfect when dexter got back from killing trinity, what would season 5 be about?

Like I said earlier, i think this will either destroy, or elevate dexter to a whole new level. The weight of this death and how it is impacting, not only Dexter, but the people around him will be yet ANOTHER new experience for him. I really do agree with rita dying in the show, as sad as i am to see her character leave, something had to be done. I will miss her phone calls at the worst possible time while dexter is in the kill room, and her annoying search into dexter’s secret life..even if i did hate it while the show was going on.

I do think that this was handled perfectly. It makes the 4th season of dexter better than any season of any show that i have ever watched. Not only that, but it makes the trinity kill scene so much more meaningful. If you go back and watch it, and see the satisfaction on trinity’s face when he says “its already over”. and when he laughs at dexter when he says that he has a family too. It was just incredible forshadowing by the writers, that i dont think anybody picked up on…i know i didnt.

All in all, what an amazing 4th season which sets up maybe even a greater 5th..the fallout of one of the best season finales of all time. I have been waiting 9 months for September 26. Poor rita, but you had to go..

    Its already over…

  3. Rita was dexter’s tie to humanity, however much he tried to deny it, Rita gave him a foothold in the human world. Over the past four seasons we have seen him develop (though he hasn’t realized it) emotions, feelings, true attachments. In the first episode of Dexter he quite plainly says “I don’t have feelings, but if I did I would have them for deb,” This proved that he didn’t care about the people he had dragged into maintaining the shield of his secret hobby. During season one, he found himself opening up to Rita in ways he didn’t think he could, and when he met personal hardships (the discovery of the boy in the blood, killing his brother) it was always to gentle, kind and loving Rita he went to. If he didn’t care for her he wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble to get rid of Paul either – Dexter loved Rita, but wasn’t aware of it fully until he nearly lost her and his son in season 3 – that was when he (unknown to himself) fully embraced his family if he had been ready to let go of the dark passenger.

However, in experiencing the evil that was inside Trinity, and the damage that had been done to his family through living with a serial killer, a soulless monster (as dexter might have put it) he decides to “embrace his family” and that one day “[he] might be rid of the dark passenger” If there was any way in which the story would continue (as i believe in season 5 he would have tried to give up killing and spend all his time with his family and the show would loose it’s flair) everything Dexter had built up for himself would be smashed, pushing every character into Dark new places especially Dexter, who’s dark passenger is now bound even tighter to him in the turmoil. Rita, you’ve been an amazing character to watch, farewell.

  4. I think it was a good move. It shocked those of us who thought we were in the groove of what was going on and what to expect. It’s bitter-sweet though because Julie Benz was exceptional in her role. It works because all along he has rationalized everything he has done as being correct, right and fair. We as the audience have embraced him and also believe it to be true. To make him a victim, of himself not only makes us question him, but ourselves as well.

  5. glad rita’s dead now the show can move on without dexter always wasting time with cover up lies. I want to see the true evil side of dexter and his killing. Thats when the shows good.

  6. Tony Gaglione says:

Simple,………… it’s not realistic that someone could hide something like that for so long, either she died or found out,……. and finding out would have just been ridiculous, great writing to kill Rita!!!! noone could have seen that one coming, and it made the 5th season that much more anticipated, Fantastic writing guys! (and girls)……..

  7. As the season progressed, I started to get a bit fed up with Rita’s demands of Dexter and her constant whining – cleverly scripted by the writers. Her death was inevitable and I thought it was a great twist in this seasons storyline. I was so shocked by her death at the end of the season - I actually felt guilty for having grown to dislike her! Clever stuff indeed. This show is fabulous – so different from anything else out there. Long may it continue!
