INTERVIEW: Austin Butler chats “Life Unexpected”

If you have yet to fall in love with the story of Lux Cassidy on Life Unexpected let me give you one more reason to watch. His name is Austin Butler and he plays the role of Jones Mager on the Tuesday night, CW dramedy about the life of teenage girl who is reunited with her birth parents after fifteen years of being in the foster care system.

I had the chance to speak to the nineteen year old, blonde babe earlier today about the chemistry between Lux and Jones, their missed opportunities, and what the future may hold for these two crazy kids. We even threw in a couple fun questions in for good measure.

After two whole episodes of season two, Jones finally made his return during episode three entitled, “Criminal Incriminated” last week. At the end of last season, when Lux decided to stay with her boyfriend Bug and not explore her feelings for the quarterback any further, I thought it would be the end for Jones.

But his return proves the writers have plenty of surprises in store for us this season!

Rosy: Do you think the timing will ever be right for a relationship between Lux and Jones to flourish?
Austin B: I hope that the timing will be right. I think that it would really be cool to explore what that would be like for Jones and I think that its been anticipated in his mind for so long that it would be so amazing if it actually happened.

I’m not really sure what they are planning in their minds because there are so many twists and turns this season but I am just completely at the will of the writers.

So we will see but I am excited to see how it will all unfold.

Rosy: What will Jones do this season to step up his game with Lux to win her affections?
Austin B.: I think that his thing right now is the fact that she has been pulling him in then pushing him away so much, and I think this is the best thing to do in real life too, is to keep your distance a little bit.

She is just not giving him the time of day at all so he is not keeping a far distance but he is not going to be waiting around forever and I think that is the smartest thing for him to do rather than smother her.

Rosy: Sometimes I wonder whether Jones is fully into Lux or if he, as a football player, is really enjoying the challenge. Am I completely off?

Austin B.: That is an interesting thought on it! I think that she is so unique and so different from any other girls he’s ever dealt with. I definitely think there is that bit of competition, like you always want what you can’t have but at the same time there are moments like in the road trip episode when he took Lux to Tasha’s house and all the time that they’ve spent together, I think he really does care about her.

That makes it even more painful, the fact that she is just leading him on then pushing him away. I think he can be really good for her and I want to see it happen for her sake.

Rosy: Do you think if Jones found out about Lux and her feelings for the new teacher Eric Daniels that he would snitch her out to Baze? He could always tell him on the down low and she would never know he was the betrayer.

Austin B.: I don’t know, I feel like there would be a lot of emotions because for one thing, she is seeing the guy all the time, Jones knows him from school, and its such a weird scenario that I feel there would be a lot of emotions going on inside of Jones of jealousy and anger and doubting himself.

But another part of me feels like he wouldn’t rat her out because I feel that would mean losing her even more.

He could always tell Baze on the D.L., that is a really good idea you should talk to the writers about that!

Rosy: During season one you had a girlfriend and she was introduced as a potential friend for Lux. But after the truth about her life in foster care was leaked, everyone turned their backs on her. But we never saw or heard from them again!

What happened to the mean girls?

Austin B.: Yeah I do not know! They kind of did fall off the planet didn’t they?

My only explanation is that once Lux came into his life it changed him in a way where she is not like a high school girl and now he doesn’t feel like he wants to be a regular high school boy. So he kind of dropped his friends and I think his buddies at school are just kind of dumb in a way so he is distancing himself from that crowd.

Rosy: I would have at least expected them to make a guest appearance during the winter formal episode. Being all snotty and annoyed that Lux showed up there with Jones.

Austin B.: I know! I didn’t think about it that much but I think with so much else is going on that they are just sticking to the main storyline. But that is a good point, they just kind of disappeared.

They are awesome girls in real life too so its sad that they are gone so maybe in the future they will make another appearance.

Rosy: Next week, Life Unexpected is going to be participating in the highly anticipated crossover episode with “One Tree Hill.” If you could have any other CW show crossover with “Life Unexpected” which would you choose?

I know I’d love to see some vampires or superheroes make their debut in Portland!

Austin B.: That would be awesome to get some vampires in there! Let’s see, we could have Nikita on the show or Hellcats and just have a bunch of cheerleaders.

Rosy: Yeah! Hellcats would work great! It fits in perfect with the high school theme!
Austin B.: Yeah you can have Ashley [Tisdale] in there and Aly [Michalka] that would be cool!

Rosy: So many fans were disappointed when the pilot for a new show entitled, Betwixt wasn’t picked up for the fall season. What is the official word on that project? Is it dead?
Austin B.: There are rumors that it might have some sort of comeback type of thing. Maybe take it to a different network or something like that but I haven’t heard anything so far. They have it in their back pocket, they have the pilot and they can always pitch it somewhere else or even pitch it somewhere else or possibly pitch it back to the CW after some changes.

But as far as I know I don’t think that anything is happening with it. Which is sad because it was a really fun show.

We thank Austin Butler for taking the time out to chat with us today. Don’t forget to catch all new episodes of “Life Unexpected” Tuesday nights on The CW.
