Halloween is next week and oodles of zombie goodness is shuffling our way. In addition to A&E’s The Walking Dead (which I’ll talk about later), IFC is premiering a new apocalyptic gore fest on October 25th called Dead Set.
Written by Charlie Brooker (The Guardian), Dead Set chronicles an epic zombie outbreak in Great Britain. Trapped in the middle of this disaster are the housemates on the reality TV series Big Brother. Pretty cool concept huh? I know I can think of several reality shows that could be made infinitely better with zombies. The Real Houswives of Atlanta come to mind. Can’t you see Nene fighting off a zombie with one of her stilettos?
The cast features Jamie Winstone (Boogie Woogie and Goldplated) as one of the Big Brother contestants and Andy Nyman (Death at a Funeral) as a producer who emerge from the Big Brother house on eviction night to find that 80% of Britain’s population is now a hoard of hungry undead. In a cruel reflection of the game show they were cast in, one by one they fall victim – devoured by the hungry, unthinking masses outside.
“The ‘Big Brother’ house seemed fitting for a TV zombie epic set in the 21st century,” says Brooker. “DEAD SET is an unashamedly populist horror-thriller with darkly comic undertones. Think ’24′ with zombies. And housemates. And gore.”
Dead Set was nominated for Best Drama Serial at the BAFTAs, and Stephen King called it “one of the ten best things I saw on TV this year.” I think Stephen Kings knows a thing or two about zombies.
Dead Set airs starting next Monday at midnight on IFC, or you can tune in at 7:30pm on Halloween and watch all five brain-devouring episodes back to back!
