REVIEW: Desperate Housewives “A Humiliating Business”

Things are getting hot on Wisteria Lane and it isn’t because of the weather. The all knowing voice of Mary Alice tells us that the word of the week is humiliation, and there is plenty of it to go around.

Bree (Marcia Cross) is humiliated when the glorious change of life takes her into its warm embrace the same week that she is due to meet her boyfriend Keith’s (Brian Austin Green) parents. To add insult to injury, Keith’s mom (Nancy Travis) turns out to be her new doctor. The bright side is that Keith’s dad (former Duke cousin John Schneider) is just as hunky as he is.

A fully clothed Susan (Teri Hatcher) is humiliated at the grocery store when she doesn’t have enough money to buy MJ his favorite cereal. She thinks help is on the way when Renee (Vanessa Wiliams) calls to tell her about the interior design firm she started with Lynette (Felicity Huffman) and wants to offer her a job. But when she arrives and finds out the job is really just as Lynette’s nanny she isn’t happy. With Mike in Alaska she doesn’t have much choice but to accept.

Creepy Paul Young felt humiliated by his neighbor’s rejection even after he was acquitted of the murder of Felicia Tillman and has hatched a ridiculous plan to make them all pay for it by lowering their property values and making them feel unsafe. Revenge. You are doing it wrong. Meanwhile his wife Beth has generously surrendered her flower of virginity to him and now she wants answers. When Paul won’t tell he what he’s up to she blackmails his old cellmate who has moved into his old house across the street. Once she has the info she reports back in with mom who turns out to be, you guessed it, Felicia Tilman! Didn’t I tell you this would happen? Perhaps after Felicia is done teaching her daughter about revenge she can help her out with some fashion tips. What was she wearing tonight? She looked like a cross between Twiggy and Jackie Onassis.

Gabby (Eva Longoria) was dealt the least amount of humiliation this week. Instead of money woes, hormonal changes and poorly executed revenge plot she was faced with Gay Bob’s crush on her husband Carlos. After Bob and Carlos bond over their shared love of sports, something that Gabby just can’t wrap her meticulously coiffured head around, she is shocked when Bob’s ex-boyfriend Lee shows up to warn her that Bob has a reputation for “flipping” straight men. Naturally this sends Gabby into a mild gay panic but ends up with her Manolo Blahnik in her mouth when the real issue turns out to be Bob’s loneliness and desire for friendship. She pushes Lee back into Bob’s arms and after ten seconds alone they are making out like horny teenagers. Pleased with her efforts she heads home only to fall off of Bob’s porch.

So the big news this week is revenge, both Paul’s and Felicia’s. I still don’t quite know what Beth stands to gain from this elaborate deception. Honestly I think that the whole Paul/Felicia/Beth storyline is a bit weak but it is still early in the season so maybe it will play out by Christmas and we can start with something more interesting in 2011. The rest of the episode felt a little like filler to me. Lynette and Renee’s design business came from nowhere. I don’t recall either of them expressing any interest in interior design before and in the space of ten minutes they have a business and a client (who looked suspiciously like one of the Landers sisters). Do they think they are the Sugarbaker’s all of a sudden?

And the end of Bree’s relationship with Keith looks like it might come sooner than later now that she has told him that she doesn’t want kids. He tries to pretend it’s okay but Bree can see that the shelf life for her romp with a younger man is going to be short.

Gabby got all the good lines this week.

Gabby: “Carlos isnt giving up these chimichangas for a plate of franks and beans.”
Lee: “I’m not sure what that means but you’ve ruined Mexican food for me.”

Gabby: “If you are interested in flipping a straight man you should look at Tom Scavo. I always thought he was three beers away.”
Bob: “Two.”

And when Bob announces he loves sports more than Broadway musicals….

Gabby: “You kiss boys with that mouth?”

Next week it is Thanksgiving on Wisteria Lane and this year the turkey is stuffed with secrets and served with a heaping side of regret! Tune in to ABC on Sunday November 14 for a bite.
