Usually when Christmas rolls around I am too distracted by the impending start of another season of 24 to focus much on yule logs or leaping lords. This holiday season however has been tainted by the sad realization that Jack Bauer isn’t returning in January to thwart yet another day-long threat to our nation. 24 was easily my favorite show of the past decade so the hole left in my soul is vast. The answer is Jack Bauer, the question does not matter. There is a bright gleaming beacon of hope on the horizon though. When 24 signed off last May with Jack heading into hiding once again and Chloe doing the ugly cry there was much talk of Jack and his CTU cohorts making the leap to the big screen. It seemed like the natural progression for the show and a chance to break free of the real-time format for a change. Early rumors suggested that the movie would be begin with a traditional narrative and them switch to real-time for the finale. Sounds intense right? As long as they give Chloe a gun I’ll be happy. We didn’t hear much about the movie over the summer but now some mutterings and twitterings are starting to leak out, no doubt lifted from an encrypted audio recording sewn into the lose skin on the back of a flabby intern who only speaks Mandarin.
Howard Gordon, the former executive producer of 24 recently spoke about his involvement in the film. He revealed that Billy Ray, the writer of Breach, submitted a script to Fox.
“There was a script, but ultimately it wasn’t the right proposition,” Gordon said. “It wasn’t strong enough or compelling enough to the studio obviously to move ahead with it.”
Gordon also revealed that Top Gun director Tony Scott “has an idea that he is going to run by Keifer Sutherland”. Let’s hope the idea involves Jack and several other FBI hotties playing shirtless volleyball to a kickin Kenny Rogers soundtrack! Okay maybe not, but it sounds like the film is moving ahead, albeit slowly. Fox should put Jack in a locked room with the writers. He’d get a script out of them.
In the meantime 24 fans can amuse themselves with “The Complete 24″ which was just released on DVD this past week. Target has it on sale for $179.99 right now. No word yet on when it will hit Blu-Ray, so until then enjoy this festive 24 themed holiday video sure to warm your heart and deck the walls of your soul with joy and happiness.
