Sad news for fans of Steve McGarrett’s (Alex O’Loughlin) sister, Mary Ann (Taryn Manning). Although she is being featured in the next episode, it will likely be her last. Originally, Mary Ann was going to be a recurring character but apparently the powers that be would like to focus more on McGarrett’s professional life, and less on his personal life.
McGarrett finds that his little sis was kidnapped, and it eventually leads a larger plot involving Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) and the death of both his father and mother.
Side bar: For those of you, like myself, who did not watch the original series, Wo Fat is Steve McGarrett’s arch nemesis. The Lex Luthor to his Superman; the Megatron to his Optimus Prime; the Professor Moriarty to his Sherlock Holmes; the, well you get the point. Wo Fat shows up in the pilot of the original series, pops in and out as time passes, and finally ends up being arrested by Jack Lord’s McGarrett in the final episode.
I don’t know what happens in the end, but it sure sounds like Mary Ann might not make it through alive! They’re calling the episode a tear-jerker. Maybe they’ll leave it hanging, in case they decide to bring her back in a later season. I know they probably want to avoid too many peripheral characters, but really? Poor Steve just lost his dad, and just found out his mom’s case was a homocide. Now you want to ax his sister too? As if he wasn’t already a pissed off man with a gun, you’re taking away the only family he has left.
What about the other characters personal side plots? Danny/Grace/Rachel/Stan? Chin Ho/Fiance? Kono and, well, maybe that new love interest in her future? I’d be OK if they gave Rachel the boot; I could never picture her and Danny together in the first place.
And here is a bit of old news, but in case you didn’t know, they’ve cast Chin Ho’s fiance. It’ll be a Lost reunion as Reiko Aylesworth joins the cast as Malia. Reiko played Amy, one of the Dharma Initiative members. Apparently, Malia still wears her engagement ring on a necklace. That definitely leads me to believe there is a chance for some rekindled love… Kono may have to learn to forgive her former almost cousin-in-law.
So, what do you Five-0 fans think about all this?? Does it seem hypocritical to want to get rid of McGarrett’s personal storylines, but still be introducing people like Chin Ho’s finance, and Danny’s brother and Rachel’s new husband? Is this just a way to make McGarrett more focused and hardcore? He already has complete disregard for doing anything the proper way (just ask Danny).

Now if this is true, and Taryn Manning won’t be returning in the future, I think the writers are doing the Steve McGarrett character a HUGE disservice. The death of his father, the introduction of WoFat and the reopening of John McGarrett’s case all ties into Steve’s past. At some point, the case will be solved. But what about the future? One of the few things that could deepen Steve and carry his development is his relationship with his sister. If Mary Ann McGarrett is permanently written out of the story line, writers will have one less critical piece to flesh out Steve McGarrett.
Get rid of Alex O’Loughlin altogether. He’s a jinx. Every show he’s on gets canceled. Kill off Mc Garrett and replace him by a new actor. Anyone will be much better than this sorry excuse for an actor. 3 series and none made it past a handful of episodes. Why? Because this guy can’t act. He got a nose job and cut his hippy hair, that’s an improvement but CBS should really invest in some boot camp acting lessons for this moron if they insist on casting him in their mediocre shows. Better yet, ship him back to Australia and let’s been done with this sorry excuse of an actor. A few episodes without Garrett while they cast a new actor and you’ll see that Caan & Co. can carry the show just fine. Don’t they have Black guys in Hawaii? Replace him with a sexy Black guy or gal and you’ll attract a larger audience.
I was very disappointed to read that Taryn Manning was going to be taken off Hawaii Five-O. Then I started to read that the other cast members would be getting more personal storylines, (Danno is even getting a brother, Dane Cook, a comedian). Gee, are we going to be subject to more snappy remarks to McGarrett?? I don’t think it is good to rid McGarrett of the last member of his family and keep him a work-aholic and distant in regards to personal stories.
There is only so many times he can take off his shirt but apparently most of his fans only see him for that use and not acting.
As Taryn Manning leaves (I will, too). This new reboot to the original series is going in the wrong direction. It is Scott Caan’s show anyway. Alex O’Loughlin isn’t going to have anything to react to except Danno’s teaching McGarrett how to do correct police procedures.
And while I think of it, Jean Smart who plays the Governor is really being wasted.
