After spending sixty nine days trapped under the earth’s surface, thirty three miners escaped relatively unharmed in Chile after a heroic rescue on October 13th, 2010. Thirteen of the them paid a special South Florida visit to the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on February 4th, 2011 for “A Tribute to Heroes and Miracles.”
A special press conference was held on February 3rd to introduce the miners to the media and they included Mario Sepulveda, Daniel Herrera, Dario Segovia, Pablo Rojas, Jose Ojeda, Carlos Bugueno, Renan Avalos, Claudio Acuna, Samuel Avalos, Florencio Avalos, Esteban Rojas, Carlos Mamani, and Victor Segovia. (shown in the photo above with yours truly in the center!)
After the press conference the guys headed out to the casino floor where they took on the black jack tables and though I didn’t stay until the end, I hope they took home some winnings to Chile when they returned on Saturday.
All proceeds from the event on Friday benefit the United Mine Workers of America Miners Aid Fund, the American Cancer Society and Disabled American Veterans.
