The Power of the Bieber took over Glee this week with two of the show’s five numbers coming from the tween’s not-so-extensive catalog of bubblegum hits. I think I am too old to hop on board the Bieber Express but I will reluctantly admit that I caught myself singing along to that damn song “Baby”. Damn Bieber and his infectious groove.
With Sue seemingly defeated and Sue-icidal Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) and his New Directions turn their focus and newfound budget surplus toward the upcoming regional competition. The theme this year is anthems so he has the gleeks bring their best epic performance. New Directions has a new member for the week thanks to Emma’s suggestion that Sue join the club in the hopes that it will lift her out of her depression. It isn’t long before she starts making mischief.
First the music. Sam (Chord Overstreet) is more concerned about keeping Quinn (Dianna Agron) attached to his pouty lips than he is about regionals so he chooses Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as his anthem, and as the debut performance of his one man band The Justin Bieber Experience. I had personally never heard this song it its entirety before this episode and no I don’t live under a rock. I actually made a conscious effort to avoid all things Bieber so it is with much reluctance that I admit I enjoyed it. I should have known I guess since I still cling nostalgically to Debbie Gibson who sang practically the same songs twenty five years ago. Still, his hair bugs me. But enough about Beebs. He dissed Lady Gaga after the Grammys and homie don’t play that. Sam did a bang up job on the tune and the boy does have some moves. The girls of the Glee club certainly seemed into it and I think I even caught my man Puckerman (Mark Salling) singing along. Does that mean Bieber is cool? Sam certainly thinks he is because before I had time to recover from the first one The Justin Bieber Experience had swollen to four members and they were singing another track called “Somebody To Love”. This one I didn’t enjoy so much, and not just because Puck had terrible Bieber-bangs.
Rachel (Lea Michele) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) find themselves manipulated into a Diva-Off orchestrated by Sue who conned her way into New Directions so she could destroy it from within. The two vocal powerhouses performed “Take Me Or Leave Me” from RENT. I had never heard this song either because I despise RENT and only managed to listen to the first couple of songs on that soundtrack before I leapt out the window. My hatred aside this song was pretty much okay and worked perfectly as a battle tune for the pair.
The big suprise this week was Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink). She gyrated her way through The Waitresses track “I Know What Boys Like” which featured lots of inappropriate touching and Puckerman in his underwear (SCORE!). Vocally she wasn’t very strong but the number was fun and I think it would have been a bit much to add another female powerhouse to the crew.
Have we forgotten that Sue (Jane Lynch) is in New Directions this week? She hasn’t so it was no surprise that she had a song of her own to sing. Decked out in a flannel track suit she lead the gleeks through an odd rendition of “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. The song seemed to be at least a little bit inspired by her recent visit to the children’s cancer ward with “Sponghair Squarechin” Mr. Schue. When she reveals afterwards that she is now the coach for rival Glee club Oral Intensity the song becomes more about her newfound desire to beat Will at his own game. The name Oral Intensity makes me feel dirty and the fact that Sue can coach the Cheerios at McKinley and also teach at whatever school OI hails from means this is the oddest school district ever.
In between the songs this week the Sam/Quinn/Finn love triangle was finally shattered by a horny Santana (Naya Rivera) who got some of the best quotes of the episode while comparing Sam to a large python who could unhinge his jaw and swallow Finn whole. I’ll pause so you can work out that visual for yourself.
Pissed off and unable to resist Santana’s breasticles he dumps Quinn. It isn’t certain she can run back to Finn (Cory Monteith) for comfort either because he seems to be falling in love with Rachel again. YAWN. Rachel is focused on her own comeback which seems to involve paying Brittany (Heather Morris) to dress like her in the hopes that the girls of McKinley will start to see her as a fashion icon. I will give you two guesses how that turns out.
Next week everyone gets drunk and Blaine kisses a girl. Tune in to Fox at 8pm on Tuesday.
