TNT Cancels HawthoRNe, Vartan Is on the Market!

Clearly Jada Pinkett-Smith has never watched an episode of Alias. She doesn’t know what messing with Vaughn brings about. Yes, Michael Vaughn, the awesome CIA agent played on Alias by my longtime TV husband Michael Vartan, one of the classiest and nicest actors in the business, and often one of the most underrated, too. For the record, he’s also ridiculously charming. And gorgeous. Fangirling shall now terminate. Ahem. So, Vartan’s character on TNT’s drama HawthoRNe was put in a ridiculous triangle storyline that included Latin singer (and former Jennifer Lopez husband) Marc Anthony, too.

The wreck of a story (can’t be defined in any other way) didn’t exactly sit well with viewers. Result? TNT announced today that HawthoRNe has been cancelled. “We wish all people involved and Jada in particular the best, yada, yada.” Well Jada, consider yourself lucky you didn’t get your ass kicked by Sydney Bristow (possibly the most hardcore woman spy ever on TV, played by Jennifer Garner on Alias. And Vaughn’s girlfriend on the show. She didn’t take messing with her man too well).

A lot of viewers were outraged by the storyline the show decided to go with this season. Now let me just say it out loud. While Marc Anthony certainly has his charm in terms of singing Latino, and can for sure act, there’s no way any sane woman would cheat on Michael Vartan, two weeks into their marriage, with him! Come on now! I get it that this is TV and suspension of disbelief is part of it, but there’s a limit to how much things can be stretched, even for TNT that makes “we know drama” its trademark.

A lot of viewers didn’t buy into the story at all, mainly because of how Marc Anthony’s character was written. Detective Nick Renata wasn’t popular among a good amount of fans, while Vartan’s character, Dr Tom Wakefield, garnered even more support from fans this season. A big portion of the fans was very vocal about their disappointment at both how Pinkett Smith’s character behaved (nurse Christina Hawthorne had thus far shown a decent moral compass, and that all went into the sinkerator together with the leftovers of my lunch this season) and how Vartan’s character was wronged in the situation. Yet Pinkett-Smith, who took over creative control of the show this season, didn’t listen. The show lost about 25% of its average viewership.

Just so it’s clear, I don’t think fans are in any position to dictate or request ANY story whatsoever on any show. I’m a strong advocate for “the show belongs to creators and writers first and foremost, and actors then”. The moment a producer or writer starts catering to the online audience (which is anyway a tiny, minor portion of the entire viewership), a show is toast. It becomes fanfic instead of TV show. And I don’t condone “shipper” war behavior, ever. [For those of you less familiar with it, "shippers" are those fans who are mainly focused on the story and outcome of a couple on a show, and only see the story and the evolution of the show based on said couple]. But, and this is a big but, when the hard numbers tell you that 25% of your viewers have gone buh-bye and you’re on cable, well it’s definitely time to consider a change in the direction you clearly think is the best thing after Richard Winsor dancing Billy Elliot. (Don’t believe me? Google him. And don’t say I didn’t warn you about how fabulous he is.)

Placing blame is always a sterile exercise, but in this case more than in any other I’ve seen regarding show cancellations, it is clear that those who held creative control of matters are to blame for what happened. So that means Jada Pinkett-Smith first and foremost. I get it Jada, you have friends and you want to bring them on to the show, because you can, and because they’re big names, people who are supposed to draw in more viewers. So fine, bring Marc Anthony on board. That does NOT equal “screw two entire seasons of the show that were built around Christina and Tom and their feelings for each other, and have Christina cheat on freshly-married Tom with Nick Renata.” Ever heard about grey zones? Those things can be pretty fundamental when writing a show. The grey areas are those that allow for writers to bring in a variety of subjects and slowly, I repeat, slowly, develop them to then become either black or white. What happened on HawthoRNe was that we went from full on white to total black without anything in between. And that never works on TV, unless you do it in one episode and then spend the 20 following ones explaining how we got from white to black. So, bye-bye HawthoRNe. After this disastrous last season, I’d be lying if I said I’ll miss you.

There is, however, ONE good side to this. Now you all major network executives and, most of all, you all incredibly wise and brilliant USA Network execs, please listen to me. Michael Vartan is on the market. I don’t think I need to explain how much of an asset this fabulous man is for a show that will bet on him (a decently written one, that is.) His most famous character remains Vaughn on Alias, and we know, because he told us, how much he loves shooting action and guns and how much he’d also love to challenge himself with comedy. He’s got it all: the charm, the talent, the fans. HIRE.HIM.NOW! Or you will have me on your conscience, since I won’t live without my weekly TV dose of Vartan! (So what, I can go drama queen if it’s needed).

Now seriously, I so could see Vartan fitting perfectly on USA Network’s Burn Notice (Michael Westen [Jeffrey Donovan] and Vaughn, YEAH!), or Royal Pains, or White Collar, too. (For the first time, Neal Caffrey [Matt Bomer] would have serious competition in the looks department, too.) We know how great he is at playing the CIA agent, we know he can play those charming characters that people will get to love in no time. Get on it please, yesterday! Oh and, in case (I doubt it, but hey, worth a shot) anyone from CBS sees this… blame Bob Orci for putting this idea in my mind, but Vartan would be a FABULOUS recurring guest star on Hawaii Five-0. Vaughn and McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) together? Do you have ANY idea how many women will tune in to watch that? (On top of your regular audience). Nothing else to add here. HawthoRNe is gone, Vartan is here to stay. Shirtless, possibly.

And with this, we say goodbye to HawthoRNe and its woes. (No, I’m not gonna delve into the whole Jada Pinkett-Smith and Marc Anthony matter. That’s best covered with strong liquor available, and right now I need to be sober.)

Bye lovelies, see ya next time!

@ Miss Bee do you have any idea on how Mr. Vartan plans to move on wit life? I do think he should get off HawthoRNe and not waste his time on that horrible t.v show. Anyways do you know if there is a way he can do an interview or make a video on what decides to do to move from this? If so please post it on the VartanHO site. Thanks :-)

Mary, hi! I haven’t had a chance to speak with Mr. Vartan again after the last interview we did here (I swear I was super professional, I didn’t scare him off! :D ) We will try to do our best to get an interview from him about his future programs and what he’d like to do to move on after HawthoRNe, but it may take a while. I’m familiar with the VartanHO site and I tried to subscribe but never got a confirmation email. It’s only fair for me to be a part of it given I don’t know anyone else who deserves that title more than I do hahah ;) Is there a special procedure I need to follow? Like a Rambaldi combination of boxes to open and passwords to discover or something? :D Seriously, let me know how I should proceed and I will. We’ll immediately post the interview here on accidentalsexiness.com should we get one of course. (I don’t think he’s in the mood to talk right now, but he may be reasonably soon). I’m going to the site right now to say hi IF I can access :) Thank you for reading… and for sharing the Vartan love! :D

You absolutely should have a Vartan Ho number!!!  You know they posted your link in the Safe House and that’s how some of us found you!  They have been a little slower to respond to things lately – maybe they didn’t get to your request yet.  When you say “subscribe” not sure what you mean.  They don’t send out things- you just go to the site and read – the Safe House has entries whenever they have something and the archives are available to all.  The email confirmation is for signing up as a Vartan Ho and you get a number – there were close to 4,000 when I signed up a number of years ago!

        I’ll drop them an email.

Hi again Janet! I just meant “ask to be on the Vartan Ho list” with “subscribe” haha ;) I think they haven’t gotten round to reading my request yet. Thank you for your help! I hope to be able to have some Vartan news relatively soon, and post them here and share with the VartanHo group of course ;)

Hey if you go on http://ww@vartanho:disqus .thesafehouse@vartanho.com, be sure to go to “Cover Stories” & read two of the hottest, seXXiest fanfics ever — “Strokes” and “Une Nuit”!!! Anyway, another choice would be to write a screenplay for Michael to star in, and I’ve had a few ideas kicking around in my head for a long time…For instance, have you ever noticed how much MV resembles the late cowboy singer/rodeo champion Chris LeDoux? It is absolutely fricking scary how much they look alike!! CL died of bile-duct cancer in 1995, after bravely fighting it for 2 years…CL wrote hundreds of songs about cowboys & rodeo life…If you want to really see the resemblance, go to Youtube & watch CL’s videos, like the hilarious “Five-Dollar Fine For Fighting”…
Why hasn’t anyone thought of putting Michael in a costume film, something like “A Tale Of Two Cities” or “The Scarlet Pimpernel”?? When the good “HawthoRNe” was still on, I thought how gorgeous MV would look in a Civil War uniform, maybe a Confederate battlefield surgeon in a flashback episode, or something…
Or how about a remake of “It Takes A Thief,” with Michael playing the master thief character Robert Wagner once played (Alexander Mundy), and have RW play his dad (played by Fred Astaire in the original)??
            What do you think??

            • Jcooper Alias54 says:

Sorry, it’s “Five Dollar Fine For Whining” –

              • Jcooper Alias54 says:

Another idea I had was that since Michael so greatly resembles the actor Leslie Howard (Ashley in “Gone With The Wind”; see “ALIAS” Season 3/Ep 7: “Prelude” — The Vaughn/Lauren scene in the garage), that he would be great in a film about him…LH was a son of Hungarian Jews (Michael is descended from Polish Jews) who emigrated to England (Michael’s family emigrated to France)…LH died in WWII, shot down over the Atlantic by the Nazis because they thought the plane he was flying was carrying Winston Churchill…In fact, his plane was a decoy for the real Churchill plane…

Miss Bee, you are a goddess!  TOTAL AGREEMENT here!  You have covered perfectly the sorry mess HawthoRNe became – really, really sad.  It started out standing for so many important things like diversity, social responsibility, commentary on health care reform.etc., and morphed into tunnel-vision soap opera “Horethorne” if you get my drift.  Best of all, you beautifully argue for the great opportunity we how have to see the terrific Michael Vartan in something worth his talents.  I especially like the ideas of Hawaii Five-O and White Collar.  I would like to add the suggestion of  Vartan getting HIS OWN SHOW!!  That would be the best.

BTW, you are ridiculously witty and hilarious.  You’re going on my Favorites!

I just realized I’ve posted here before as I see the DISQUS but can’t recall if I created a log in.

Here goes with the “submit” to see what happens.

    • Miss Bee says:

Janet, I should probably have put all this in one comment but I just hit “reply” and I’ve been lazy ;) Anyway, thank you so very much for your compliments and I’m humbled and honored to go on your favorites! I did think the first season of HawthoRNe was really well-written and well-handled, and like you said, it stood up for many important things. Sadly, the writers left and Jada Pinkett-Smith took over creative control this season. I’m not informed on all the details so I can’t make an appropriate analysis of how this went down, but I take it there had to be some fallout of some kind for them to leave en masse and Pinkett-Smith to take over. Whatever the reason behind it, the result clearly was as good as my dinner leftovers from last week. (no wait I’m a great cook, those would still be better).

Trust me, if there’s someone who thinks Vartan should get HIS OWN SHOW, that’s me! I’ve been TV married to him for the longest time now! We go waaay back.. when he even wasn’t famous with the whole Drew Barrymore movie kissing ;) I think producers will obviously look at him now that he’s free from HawthoRNe. He really needs a quality show, and those right now are mainly on USA Network. Then of course there’s super niche stuff like the outstanding Mad Men but I don’t know if he’d fit on such a serious drama. And since he expressed his desire to do some comedy, too, I really think USA Network would be his best bet now. Of course I won’t complain if one of the major networks hires him for one of their shows… as long as they snatch him up QUICK. He deserves to be on TV. I can read all of your comments, but if you can’t it may be a technical issue. I can’t read some of mine either when I log on site, so it has to be a temporary glitch!

I couldn’t help thinking the writers were shown the door to make way for Jada and her brother Caleeb to do the plot the way they wanted.  The show tried to say the writers “finished all their work early” – !! – suggesting nothing else needed to be written. And if you believe that, I have this bridge in Brooklyn…..!  Yes, I agree there was either some kind of fall-out – as in a refusal to continue to write craziness – or they wrote non-crazy stuff and Pinkett Smith and family showed them the door and wrote it themselves.  Again, I just hope we find out someday.

So titillated by your comment that you’ve been a fan of MV before NBK!!  I didn’t hear about him until Alias but have since found and purchased everything that’s for sale that he did.  When did you first hear of him?  Smart lady!

Just realized I misspelled HawthoRNe  - should be HOrthorne in keeping with SO many things, e.g., the wrong letters being capitalized……..given the totally new character of the show in the third season…….

Hahaha.. well sometimes show do take a direction that is far from ideal BUT I have to admit I haven’t seen anything go downhill this fast in the span of a season that’s half as many episodes as a regular network-TV season. Guess it’s a new record!

Isn’t that the truth?  It was unbelievable.  I can’t figure out why TNT let it just crash and burn like that.  Some ironclad contract with Pinkett Smith that she could do whatever she wanted?  It just got crazier every week.  Literally crazier.  Hope some day we get to know what really went down.

Oh, also, I decided I still misspelled HawthoRNe – much better as HOthorne – no “r”  - the third time is the charm, as they say.  Perfect since Christina went from an RN to a … well, you know.  Seriously, it’s really sad how that character devolved.  And crazy.  We are all shaking our heads.  Thanks again for your wit and right-on commentary.  Helps to be able to dish with smart and funny people!

Thank you for following us and enjoying the read and engaging in intelligent conversation! I think once Jada Pinkett-Smith got creative control, that she was in a position to call the shots like any other showrunner/writer. Essentially what went missing here was control on part of the cable channel, and some restraint on her part, as in, avoid those gimmicks and all that craziness just because it’s not the smart way to handle a show at all and if you want to be called a decent showrunner, you should know that. I think she lacked the experience to do this and she let it get to her head somehow.

They clearly needed someone with a lot of expertise to handle this alongside her and to keep her crazy ideas under control but they didn’t do that. Like I said, I am unaware how the whole thing happened in detail so I may be way off mark here. But it really looks like she thought she was God and could do just about anything and just about anything would be brilliant. And the network made a major mistake not stepping in when they saw 25% of the viewers was gone. That was well before the finale episode. I guess there was a whole set of circumstances that contributed to this ending up with such a mess so quickly. All I know is they could have and should have done way better. It didn’t take much. The moment she even hinted at the affair idea they should have just said “no, you are not doing that.” That alone would have avoided a big part of the mess. It’s a shame because the show was really good in S1 and for a good part of S2. They jumped the shark so quickly we didn’t even see the shark coming!

Haha, sadly I’ve seen that name for Christina’s character many times in comments about the show. It’s a pity because, with all her faults, she used to be a great character. But hey, now we can finally hope Monsieur Vartan gets a show he deserves. With good writing, action and a bigger audience! Who knows, maybe this will all be for the best!

          • Janet says:

I really like your hypotheses.  I wonder, though, if Jada negotiated total (and irrevocable?) control before the season started.  The reason I’ve thought about this goes back to how unbelievably long it took TNT to renew HOthorne last fall.  Do you remember?  All the other shows I think were either renewed or cancelled and we were going nuts waiting for the decision on this show.  It started to really feel as though there was some sort of standoff in negotiating something – and seeing what went down, I think it was very likely Jada’s insistence in spotlighting Marc Anthony, making him equal to Vartan, publicizing the show as a “love triangle” which everybody thought was nuts even before the season started, etc.  I also got the feeling during the season that Jada was after an Emmy.  She wanted the control to write herself all those juicy scenes during the “one tragedy after another” first phase of the season.  She didn’t realize, however, that impressive-looking acting becomes grotesque when it doesn’t fit into a powerful and reasonable framework and that nobody is going to vote an Emmy for anything related to a terrible show.  It might have worked if she’d known when to pull back and stop the madness, but it just got worse and worse.

I’m curious about where you saw HOthorne – haven’t seen  it on the TNT boards.  I’m so sad I’m not as clever and original as I thought! LOL  Seriously, I would be interested in reading those comments

I could see Dr. Tom Wakefield moving on to take that position at Sloane-Kettering NY that he was offered at the start of Season 2…Let him do cancer research & oncology and make a whole new group of nurses swoony & swimmy-headed…He deserves better than that “controlling, narcissistic basket case”…Michael was magnificently, deliciously seXXy in “ALIAS” and “Big Shots,” and should have been a series lead long before “HawthoRNe”…
As Dr. Tom, he was the moral anchor of the show, courageously fighting to save his baby’s life, a loving and supportive stepfather to Camille, and showing an open heart to his erring wife, even as she continually pushed him away…
I will be sad to see Dr. Tom go, but Jada treated both Tom and Michael shabbily and disrespectfully…I hope Tom will be the one who truly rises from the ashes, his kindness and humanity intact…
And Michael has so many doors open to him now…I hope some sharp studio people & directors will rush to snap him up…

I agree on the analysis you made of the show and even more so with what you said about Michael Vartan. He certainly deserves to have bigger projects to deal with, and I share the hope that executives at networks snatch him up QUICKLY! He’s too talented and popular to not be on our TVs way more often! Thank you for your comment!

PS: Love that we’re clearly both major Alias fans. Alias is just for the super-cool people! ;)
