It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to announce the death of Spartacus star Andy Whitfield at the age of thirty nine. The Australian actor succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in Sydney according to his wife Vashti who released a statement calling her husband a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in the “arms of his loving wife.”
Andy, who was born in Wales, found fame across the globe while starring as the lead in the Starz drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand but was not able to return for a second season after being diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”
When we spoke to series creator Steven DeKnight at Comic Con, he would not give us an update on Andy’s health but did tell me he hoped to work with him again on a different type of project.
I pray for his loved ones during this sad…sad time. May you rest in peace.
