Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei are fashion forward in NYC

Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei made quite the fashionable pair at the premiere of The Ides of Marchheld at the Ziegfeld Theater on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 in New York City, New York. The fiery-haired Evan rocked the red carpet in a burgundy, leather Preen dress and matching Salvatore Ferragamo pumps.

But my favorite thing about her entire look is the stunning hat featuring a purple bow on it! It gave the ensemble a mysterious vibe kicked in with a little old school flavor.

Wood and Tomei first co-starred in the highly lauded Darren Aronofsky film The Wrestler in 2008 before working on The Ides of March and the duo have talked about how great it was to work together again.

Producer, Director, Writer and star of the film George Clooney also made a sexy appearance at the Big Apple premiere sans rumored new girlfriend Stacy Keibler.

Catch The Ides of March when it hits theaters on October 7th.

REVIEW: American Horror Story “Pilot”

Remember what happened when you took Tylenol PM and drank an entire bottle of $4 white zinfandel while watching Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me at 3am? Remember that feeling of disorientation and befuddlement? Or was that just me? Watching American Horror Story reminded me a bit of that feeling a bit too much. I didn’t see any spectral white horses or dancing midgets in my living room but I did go to sleep wondering what in the hell I had just watched.

The team that brought us Glee (yes THAT Glee) Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have diverted about as far as possible from their feel good teen musical romp into a world of self-mutilation, gruesome miscarriages, killer infants and a house that makes that lovely home in Amityville seem like a bed and breakfast. The pilot was a bit overwhelming to be honest. I could hardly make sense of all the information being squirted out of the television, but it is stylish and interesting and Jessica Lange chews a hole in the scenery big enough to walk through. She should be worshipped often.

Here is the setup. Therapist Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) and his wife Vivien (Connie Britton) are making a move to the west coast with their bundle of sunshine daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) after Ben was caught canoodling one of his students in the aftermath of Vivien’s horrific miscarriage. The couple is putting on a happy front for their daughter but things are far from peachy. With the help of a perky realtor (Mrs. Huber from Desperate Housewives) they find a new house in Los Angeles where they can make a fresh start. Mayhem and terror ensues.

With any haunted house story the house itself is the main character American Horror Story is no different. The house in question is large and appropriately creepy when viewed from the extreme camera angles so common in this genre. However it doesn’t look as old as it claims to be and in its dilapidated state looks more like the haunted mansion ride at Disneyland than an eighty year old abandoned mansion. Thank goodness the gay couple who lived there before had the good sense to restore the place completely before killing themselves in the basement. They were also kind enough to leave behind their bondage gear, including a rubber gimp suit which is just hanging around in the attic waiting to be used.

The neighbors are no picnic either. Right next door is Constance (Jessica Lange), an aging southern belle with aging attitudes about the world, a doggie day car service and a disturbing relationship with her daughter Addie who is mentally challenged and has a bizarre fixation with the house. Constance is glorious and got all the good dialogue in the pilot. My favorite of her quotes involved her “flashing her green pasture for all to see”. Her daughter is a mess though and I have no doubt will be up to no good before this is over. Another scene stealer arrived in the form of Moira the housekeeper who comes with the house and who appears to each of the Harmon’s in a different form. Vivien and Violet see her as an old woman with a bad eye (Frances Conroy) while Ben sees her as a hot young slutty maid (Alexandra Breckenridge) who’d rather polish her lady parts than the silver.

This first episode was a bit disjointed to be honest. I suspect the jarring changes in tone were an attempt to unsettle the viewer and it succeeded to the point of almost turning me off. Violet’s encounters at school with a shrieking trio of Mean Girls who attack her after the most minor of teenage infractions is so stunningly out of place and over the top that it was almost silly. Violet’s revenge with the help of her dad’s new patient Tate (Evan Peters) was equally bizarre and confusing. Tate is a whole can of messy worms as well. He’s in therapy because he dreams of murdering his classmates and his penchant for self-mutilation helps him forge a bond with the impressionable and possibly horny Violet .By the end I was questioning which of these characters was real and which ones were ghosts. I’m sure that is the whole point. The bad news here is that while I found American Horror Story to be visually stunning and the characters compelling there wasn’t much scary about it. To be fair, I watch horror movies a lot and I could be desensitized to a lot of what makes the average person hide under the blankets. It had some great moments and Team Glee did manage to crank up the creepy to a respectable level. We’ll see how it plays out.

The good news is that the acting is top notch. Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott are wonderful. Their argument about his infidelity and her miscarriage was heartbreaking to watch. It does lead to a moment of reconciliatory sex on the floor which opens the door for the Rubber Man to appear later and impregnate Vivien with the house’s demon spawn. Why does the house want her pregnant? Does it have something to do with the killer toddler in the basement? Who knows? The house certainly seems to have an agenda. Former tenant Larry (Denis O’Hare) has definite opinions about it and tries to warn Ben to get his family out before he burns them alive like he did. But was he a ghost too? It’s hard to tell at this point.

American Horror Story is certainly worth a look. It is a nice departure from the cop procedurals and Who is Dancing with Who shows that dominate the networks lately. The first hour seemed to be trying a little too hard but I think when it finds its legs the tone will level out a bit. Tune in to FX Wednesdays at 10pm to check it out, but make sure the kids are in bed. Remember this is cable so while you may get a glimpse of Dylan McDermott’s ass (long glimpses even) you also might see something gross. Just a friendly warning.

New photos from The Avengers feature Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans!

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any better after seeing photos of Alexander Skarsgard earlier today, we get these brand spankin’ new images of The Avengers featuring Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans! The duo were looking up at the camera with the most adorable-yet-confused looks on their pretty faces.

If only Hemsworth knew what I was thinking every time I saw him and his hammer! O_o

Another new image released by Disney features director Joss Whedon and Scarlett Johansson having a chat on the set. ScarJo seems deep into thought, I wonder what Mr. Whedon is saying to her?

Anyone else excited about The Avengers release on May 4th, 2012??

Jennifer Garner shares a wave and a smile

Do these pictures remind anyone else of Jennifer Garner and her growing belly during season five of the ABC hit series Alias? Who could imagine Sydney Bristow pregnant again by her hunky husband Michael Vaughn (played by Michael Vartan)?!

But I digress…

These new photos show the beautiful mommy-to-be as she enjoyed warm drinks with a few gal pals at M Café in Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011. She sweetly waved at the cameras before heading out onto the recently rained on sidewalk.

Garner is currently pregnant with her third child from Ben Affleck whom she married in 2005. The baby will join sisters Violet and Seraphina in the busy Affleck household.

Is anyone else really hoping this couple gets a boy this time around?

Alexander Skarsgard takes time for some tea

Poor Alexander Skarsgard can’t even enjoy a meal and a bit of tea without it being captured by the prying eye of the paparazzi! But we love every bit of him that we can see, like these images taken at Gamma restaurant in New York City, New York on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011.

The small screen vampire has been keeping pretty busy while the HBO hit supernatural drama True Blood is on hiatus. He made his arrival into the Big Apple in August to film scenes from the upcoming drama What Maisie Knew and was seen most recently on the set of Disconnect.

Promotions for his movie Straw Dogs took place somewhere in between his shooting schedule followed by special appearances in support of Melancholia.

This is all great news for fans of this Sexy Swede who get to see so much of him!

Now let the man finish drinking his tea!

REVIEW: Glee “Asian F”

This week on Glee Mike Chang, the former wall flower and butt of many borderline inappropriate Asian jokes stepped out of the shadows and rubbed his awesomeness in everyone’s face. Boo yah! I’ve suspected for quite a while that Mike was more than just an amazing set of abs and fly dance moves and he proved it this week with his first solo and…get ready for it…his own subplot! And there’s more! Mercedes and Emma got some much deserved face time this week on what had sort of become The Finn and Rachel Show and I say “bravo” and “more please”.

The awkwardly titled “Asian F” focused mostly on Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr) making the worst mistake an Asian student can make by getting an A minus on an exam. Please take a moment to let that sink in. I’ll understand if you need to walk away from you computer for a moment to gather yourself. Better? Okay. In reaction to the horror of this Mike’s father (Keong Sim) asks him to pull out of Glee club and potentially stop seeing “that girl” Tina Cohen-Chang who for some random reason is running around McKinley wearing vampire fangs and threatening to drain people. In the end he chases his dream instead and shares a touching moment with his mother (Tamlyn Tomita) in the choir room. Later he auditions for the musical with “Cool” from West Side Story and he actually has a pretty decent voice. Go Mike!

The race for senior class President heats up this week as Brittany (Heather Morris) uses what her momma gave her to whip the girls of McKinley into a frenzy of political awareness and girl power with a big flashy rendition of Beyonce’s “Run The World (Girls)”. Brit has the moves to pull it off but vocally I think Santana (Naya Rivera) would have run that mutha. I do want to know how Brit pulled off that magical costume change in the hallway though. Even Kurt (Chris Colfer) seemed confused. Doesn’t McKinley have a dress code? Anyway, Brit’s successful pep rally performance makes her opponent Kurt a little nervous but he was too busy being an awesome boyfriend to Blaine (Darren Criss) to let it bother him too much. The way he supported Blaine for the role of Tony was awesome and their scene on the steps was just too sweet. And how cute did Blaine look in his little bowtie?

Amidst all this drama the casting for the big school musical West Side Story must go on and Mercedes (Amber Riley) is fed up with Golden Child Rachel (Lea Michele) and ready to unleash her Level 72 Howling Fjord Diva Monster on everyone. She auditions first with Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight” and wows the judges. But when Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) pushes her over the edge during Booty Camp she explodes and sprays the room with her superiority complex before stomping off stage. This leads to a Dreamgirls dream sequence featuring the whole cast performing Effie’s “It’s All Over” starring Kurt’s impossibly high falsetto and Quinn’s monstrous beehive.

Afterward Mercedes seems to regret her tantrum for about thirty seconds then moves on to ace her audition for Maria, forcing a call back and a diva-showdown with Rachel. The support of her boyfriend Shane (LaMarcus Tinker) gives Mercedes the extra confidence she needed to sing Rachel off the stage with “Out Here On My Own” from FAME and upset the Golden Child so much that she decided to launch her own misguided campaign for class President so her senior year doesn’t turn into a gaping void of mediocrity. In the process she managed to alienate just about everyone though, so things aren’t working out very well for Rachel at the moment. Even Finn (Cory Monteith) seems ready to turn against her again.

The real story this week though was Emma’s heartbreaking bedside breakdown after the disastrous visit from her Ginger Supremacist parents. The scene was superbly acted by both Jayma Mays and Matthew Morrison and gave us a look at why Emma has the issues she does. Poor Will was left speechless and with no idea what to do he decides a Coldplay song is the best way to help. Let me go on record as saying Coldplay is NEVER the answer to anything but the song “Fix You” seemed to fit the circumstances well.

In the end Mercedes decides she has truly outgrown New Directions, quits the group and declines to share the role of Maria with Mercedes. Instead she seeks out Shelby (Idina Menzel) and joins her nameless rival vocal group hoping to get the star treatment she feels she deserves. Not really shocking at all but should set up some interesting conflicts down the road. With the winner of The Glee Project joining the show soon I foresee a show choir battle coming up of epic proportions.

Glee seems to be trying some new things this season and I applaud the effort. Bringing Mike, Mercedes and Emma to the spotlight this week was a wise move and really showed off their abilities. Emma is wonderful and almost stole the show completely with just one scene. Mike is the real star this week though. Bravo to Harry Shum Jr for surprising us all.

Glee is taking a three week break so something related to some silly sports thing can happen. I’ll miss it but it does free up my Tuesdays for a while. See you in November!

Eva Longoria gets pretty with Paves

It’s been a year of changes for Eva Longoria, and it looks like she is welcoming the fall with a new hair-do! The 36-year-old Latina was photographed departing from the Ken Paves Salon in Beverly Hills, California on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 rockin’ a very different style.

Looking sexy-yet-warm in an oversized knit sweater and slouchy boots, Eva gave a cute smile to photographers before getting into her oversized vehicle.

Longoria just returned from Dubai where she helped launch the autumn-winter New York New York campaign at Bloomingdale’s in The Dubai Mall on Saturday where she confessed to being a shoe collecter.

Eva is currently starring in the last season of the ABC hit, Desperate Housewives.
