REVIEW: American Horror Story “Murder House”

Okay FX we need to talk. As a big horror fan I really wanted American Horror Story to be something special. I longed for a show that had me glued to the television quivering with fear each week but it just isn’t working out. What gives? The cast is great and the haunted house is big and spooky when lit a certain way, but last night’s episode “Murder House” was just a train wreck. I don’t mean the sort of big awesome Super 8 train wreck that makes you go “whoa” but a slow and deliberate derailment where you can see the school bus full of orphans holding kittens stuck on the tracks but can’t do anything to help them.

“Murder House” started out okay. The back-story of the doctor sewing bat wings on dead pigs while the theme from Bram Stoker’s Dracula blasts in his basement that then turned to cheap abortions to support his shrieking wife was creepy enough but then Tara’s crazy drunk mom from True Blood showed up in Ben’s office and things started going awry. I get that Moira drugged him but why? It made no sense to me at all. Is she trying to destroy his career because she hates men who cheat based on the fact that she herself slept with Constance’s husband? At least we know now why Connie put a bullet through her face. Old Moira just wants to move into the light so why is she hanging around? Is Slutty Moira keeping her there? Is this her purgatory for being a lonely and horny maid? Why? Why? Why?

Ben (Dylan McDermott) certainly doesn’t need Moira’s help destroying his life. He has already lied to Viv about the nature of his trip back to Boston and lied about their money situation which helps explain why they can’t just up and move out of the house. And Viv has made it very clear if she catches him lying again she’s outtie. The situation gets worse when Hayden shows up at his house with the news she has decided to keep the baby. As soon as those words came out of her mouth I said “she’s dead” and then WHAM…Larry the Burn Guy (Denis O’Hare) relocated her face with a shovel and they buried the poor girl in the hole that Ben was randomly digging earlier in the episode. But even that was no surprise. When Larry was hitting Ben up for money before Hayden showed up I thought “he’s gonna end up doing Ben a big favor and then blackmailing him for the cash”. All this has been done before!

At least Vivien (Connie Britton) seems to have some sense about her. She is all about getting the hell out and actually took Violet out to look at some apartments. But Violet isn’t too keen on moving and threatens to run away if she is forced to leave the house. I’m guessing she under Tate’s spell and with his pouty lips and surly demeanor who wouldn’t be? I think I understand the root of her irrational reaction but the writers are not doing a very good job connecting the dots. And speaking of Tate (Evan Peters) I still think he is Constance’s dead son. Tate is the least of Viv’s worries though. Between their money woes, the Murder House tour and her doctor’s orders that she not move while pregnant it is looking less likely she’ll get the family out before her demon spawn is born. She seemed awfully pleased with the gazebo Ben bought and erected to cover Hayden’s grave at the end though despite their money troubles. I guess she was hoping it would help sell the place.

I’ve heard American Horror Story compared to The Amityville Horror if it had been directed by David Lynch, but I think that is too much praise for this mess. I’ve seen scarier episodes of Supernatural and I bailed on that show years ago. I can’t figure out what is going on with American Horror Story half the time because the world is so inconsistent. Why does the dead wife of the creepy doctor show up with a gunshot wound to her head but no one can see the hole in Moira’s head? And why can everyone see some of the ghosts but others see none of them, but the ones that see them don’t think anything of it? The story may be a poorly executed rehash of a dozen other stories but the stellar acting by Connie Britton and Jessica Lange makes it somewhat compelling. I say somewhat because my attention started drifting along about the time Ben woke up in the front yard with blood on his hands. I found Angry Birds to be more interesting after that but I think I’ll give it another couple of episodes before I decide whether or not to bail on this one. Halloween is usually a promising time for scary shows so we’ll see what Ryan and Brad pull out of their hats for this one.

Sons of Anarchy: Will Juice live to see another day?

If you think the tension on Sons of Anarchy has grown exponentially since the start of the season, Emilio Rivera (who plays Mayan leader Alvarez) promises you ain’t seen nothing yet! We had the chance to speak with him yesterday after learning his character ends up the victim of a bullet in 7th episode of season four. He said you cannot miss one episode from here on out or you will be missing out on some major intensity! (more from our interview with Emilio in an upcoming post!)

**SPOILER ALERT! LOTS OF SPOILERS AHEAD, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!**

In “Fruit for the Crows” we finally see Bobby (Mark Boone Jr) stand up to Clay (Ron Perlman) who has been on his shit list ever since agreeing to mule drugs around for Romeo (Danny Trejo) and the Galindo cartel. The culmination finally puts Bobby in a position to challenge Clay’s leadership ability in front of his fellow SAMCRO boys and calling an “officers challenge.”

Could this lead to Clay being ousted as President leaving the spot to be filled by someone who opposes the shady dealings between the Cartel and SAMCRO? Things sounds like they will end up getting crazier before they get better.

And how about that Juice (Theo Rossi) storyline? You can tell he has been feeling all kinds of conflicted for at least the last 2 or 3 episodes which led us into the final scene when he attempts to take his own life.

Lucky for us fans of the Juice that it sounds like the branch snaps once the screen went dark so it might not be the last we’ve seen of Rossi just yet. And I do have a special message for Assistant U.S. Attorney Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon), don’t you know what happens to people like you? Two words: Agent Stahl. Look her up!

I have a feeling Sheriff Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar) will get some nerve and redeem himself. He doesn’t seem to want to be Potter’s patsy but he is doing it anyways! Get a clue and grow some balls please.

A spoiler I read from Ausiello this week mentioned his desire for Tara (Maggie Siff) not to die this season which really has me worried for Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) ol’ lady. Yeah she can be a bit annoying sometimes but she is raising his two sons and saving lives everyday at the hospital. (Not to mention the lives of SAMCRO and their associates who end up injured in the line of duty!)

One of the things I told show creator Kurt Sutter at Comic Con this year was that I loved that he wasn’t afraid to kill off popular characters. Yeah I’m still mourning the loss of Half Sack but it does keep you on your toes when nobody is safe.

Could the show work if Tara is killed? Absolutely. Gemma (Katey Sagal) would step-up as grandmother and help her son raise those boys, especially since there is a HUGE chance in my mind that Clay could end up dead himself by seasons end!

Jax would end up President with his bff Opie (Ryan Hurst) would ride by his side in the coveted VP spot. This would herald a whole new era for SAMCRO that would please both the older and younger members of the club.

So much can happen in the remaining 5 episodes of the season, so be sure to sit glued in front of your tv Tuesday nights at 10 pm–only on FX.

Here is a preview of episode 8 entitled, “Family Recipe.”

Pan Am beauty spotted in New York

Aussie goddess and Pan Am star Margot Robbie was spotted wandering New York and looking flawlessy glamorous this week. Margot plays the naive Laura Cameron, baby sister to CIA operative Kate played by Kelli Garner. Margot originally auditioned for the doomed Charlie’s Angels reboot but ABC liked her in the blue uniform instead. I bet she’s happy about that decision now that Angels has been cancelled!

Check out the pics below and look for Margot on Pan Am this coming Sunday on ABC.

Colin Farrell gets poetic in Los Angeles

Gawd help anyone who has anything bad to say about my husband Colin Farrell! After meeting his fabulous self at San Diego Comic Con this year I find it impossible to utter a bad word about this former bad boy!

Colin looked sexy in a denim shirt and a pair of black frame glasses as he grabbed dinner in Los Angeles, California on Monday, October 17th, 2011 with a copy of the collected poems of Patrick Kavanaugh.

Earlier today the trailer for Colin’s latest film London Boulevard was released to the internet. The drama tells the story of Mitchel (Farrell), a guy who just got out of jail and wants to stay legitimate but his friends involved in the messy London underground fear him and wants him to join them again. Even though Mitchel tries his best to stay away, he gets himself a job as a bodyguard for a retired actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley) who is still hot news for the paparazzi.

Mitchell, through his friend Billy eventually meets the underground Don by the name of Gant (Ray Winstone) who wants Mitch to work for him because of Mitch’s reputations. While working together Mitch and Charlotte fall in love. Gant asks Billy to get the guy who sent Mitch to jail but it turns out to be the wrong one, Gant kills the guy in front of Mitch and lets Mitch know that he has to work for him now that Mitch has seen him commit the murder but Mitch refuses.

Gant keeps trying to force Mitch to his side promising him good ranks and positions but he has to let go of Charlotte but Mitch turns him down even threatens him to stop trying making Gant really angry. Now Mitch has to suffer the consequences.

Check out London Boulevard when it hits theaters on November 11th.

Chris Hemsworth takes a break in Barcelona

As much as I want to hate on Elsa Pataky for snagging one of THE hottest men on the planet, I just can’t. The Spanish beauty was spotted getting cozy with husband Chris Hemsworth during a romantic lunch along the coast of Barcelona, Spain on Monday, October 17th, 2011.

This is a much needed break for Chris who has been working really hard on The Avengers film alongside Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner AND Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.

It’s just too sweet seeing how lovey dovey these two are when they think no one is watching. Sadly, Chris looks a bit peeved once he’s realized there is a photographer capturing these moments.

Can’t say that I blame him, but I sure to love seeing these snaps!

Actor Paul Wesley and his wife Torrey Devitto attended Spike TV’s Scream 2011 awards held at Universal Studios in Universal City, California on October 15, 2011.The Vampire Diariesstar was amongst the many celebs honoring the best in horror, sci-fi, fantasy and comics. While the show wasn’t nominated this year, the cast has surely had their fair share of scary experiences.

“I was in a car accident when I was 17 and flipped 12 times and landed upside down in a ravine. I’d put my seatbelt on just five minutes before it happened.” Wesley told TV Guide in an exclusive interview.

Safety first, Paul! No one wants you to be missing from Mystic Falls.

“Once [while flying out of] the Miami airport, there was some electrical problem that caused our plane to plummet thousands of feet. Slicing through the air, I looked out the window and saw the ocean getting closer and closer. I freaked out.”  Ian Somerhalder said.

Wow, this situation hits close to home! Freaky!  I wonder if it happened during THIS event?
