REVIEW: The Walking Dead “What Lies Ahead”

Season two of AMCs The Walking Dead picks up right where last season left off, with the group headed out of Atlanta after the destruction of the CDC. There is a new team of writers this year and it remains to be seen what that will mean, but so far we are off to a really good start setting a new ratings record for cable with 7.3 million viewers…before DVR viewing is accounted for. That ain’t too shabby.

Not far out of the city our roving band of survivors faces an epic traffic jam blocking their way, or what we in Atlanta like to call “a day on I-20″. Before they can make their way through the RV breaks down and while Dale works on fixing it the others start rummaging through the abandoned cars for supplies. They find enough water and fuel to get them all the way to Fort Benning where they hope to find help.

But this is a zombie story after all and just as the sun starts getting really hot Rick (Andrew Lincoln) notices a walker making its way down the road, followed by another and another until they realize an entire herd of brain-eaters is bearing down on them. Quickly and silently they drop to the ground and hide under the cars while the walkers pass. It was an incredibly tense few minutes of television and our group almost made it out unscathed. Before its over T-Dog is injured and little Sophia has been chased off in the woods with Rick in hot pursuit. Rick saves the little girl by drawing the walkers away but Sophia vanishes into the woods before he can get back. The rest of the 90 minute episode was spent looking for her. Before long they hear bells in the woods and figure the girl has found a church and is signaling them. Zombies aren’t smart enough to ring bells for dinner are they?

The church turns out to be a dead end and after disposing of some random walkers the group takes turns making peace with God before moving on. Andrea overhears Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Shane discussing his intentions and she wants in on the deal. He isn’t sold on it but I suspect he will be. With Sophia gone the already damaged unit splinters even more. Carol (Melissa McBride) blames Rick for leaving her little girl alone. Andrea (Laurie Holden) is finding it hard to come up with a reason to live now that her baby sister is dead and Dale (Jeffrey DuMunn) isn’t too keen on letting her go. And Shane (Jon Bernthal), realizing he doesn’t have a place there now that Rick and Lori are back together plans on heading off on his own as soon as he can slip away.

With every zombie story there comes a fair amount of gore and this episode was full of it. The zombie autopsy in the woods was especially gruesome and made me wish I had waited to eat dinner after the episode. The Walking Dead is always good for a cliffhanger the finale ended with a bang that no doubt had viewers everywhere throwing things at the television. It is a brave move to focus the harm on the kids in the cast but it seems to have worked. The previews certainly didn’t give us any idea as to what becomes of the little ones later on. I guess we’ll have to tune in.

The Walking Dead returns next Sunday on AMC.

Clinique celebrates 40th Anniversary of Aromatics Elixir

As a fragrance enthusiast, I was very excited to see what goodies Clinique was going to unveil in honor of the 40th anniversary of their Aromatics Elixir. Recognized by perfumers all over the world as the pinnacle scent in the Chypre category, the fragrance has gained global popularity that has been driven solely loyal fans and word of mouth.

It really has such an intriguing history down to it being sold behind the counter and only those “in-the-know” really knew to ask for it when it first came out!

I received the Solid Perfume Necklace to review in honor of the anniversary and now I am one of the lucky women that are “in-the-know.” Just a light swirl of the product, in conjunction with the warm touch of the skin, brings out the beautiful harmony of the perfume.

The limited-edition Clinique Aromatics Elixir three-piece anniversary collection available globally starting in October 2011.

Doutzen Kroes launches ‘Repeat by Doutzen’ winter collection in Berlin

Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes was spotted at a department store in Berlin, Germany promoting her Repeat by Doutzen collection on October 15, 2011.After browsing through her winter collection, I want to throw on a pair of snow boots and grab a flight to the Netherlands! The collection is complete with both women and men apparel along with accessories and home and living.Being such a simple girl when it comes to design, I’m huge fan of the wide variety of natural tones like as beige, taupe, camel, grey and of course, the classic black and white.

The tunic sweaters are high on my list including the v-neck style, large loose collar, or the oversized fit. How much more comfort do you need? Any of these would go perfectly with a pair of jeans and leather boots. Incident winter chic!

The cashmere and knitted dresses also caught my eye coming in a charcoal color styled with a pair of leggings and knitted hat. Even legwarmers would do the trick!

Now on the look that can never be denied: the classic twin set cardigan. Many may think that the cardigan set might reflect their grandma’s closet, but such a sharp piece can make any outfit complete! Try a pair of cashmere gloves for the ultimate vintage vibe!

Check out Doutzen’s collection at Repeat Cashmere here or locally in South Florida at On My Own in Aventura.

REVIEW: Fringe “Subject 9″

So far this season Fringe has really delivered some top notch television and while I do enjoy the addition of Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) to the mix on our side he’s no Peter whose absence has really revealed his role as the anchor of the show. That isn’t to say that Olivia, Walter and Astrid aren’t very capable on their own but for me their story only works when I know Peter is lurking underneath. It could be argued that I have a soft spot for Joshua Jackson, and that would be correct, but I doubt I’m the only one ready for him to come back to Fringe. Well this week we got our wish.

Armed with the knowledge that Olivia (Anna Torv) has also been having visions of the same strange yet captivatingly handsome man who has been terrorizing the lab Walter (John Noble) sets up an elaborate camera trap based on an idea he got watching The Matrix. He aims to catch a photo of this man but isn’t having much luck, and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) is visibly annoyed with the whole project. The situation is further complicated by the strange cloud of electromagnetic energy that seems to be chasing Olivia and bending space/time a little bit. Walter wonders if one of the Cortexiphan kids might be behind it and he sets off for New York with Olivia to track down Subject 9, his first trip out of the lab in three years.

But what made Walter decide to leave the lab after all this time? I’m happy you asked. Walter noticed a letter to Olivia from St. Claire’s asking her about Walter’s mental state. His future is in her hands and if she thinks he isn’t coping well he will be sent back to the loony bin. He decided his best bet was to show Olivia he was improving, but it does not go so well. After an amusing and amazingly well acted journey down a New York sidewalk where his senses are being overloaded he has a complete meltdown in his hotel room over unseen germs on the bedspread. Olivia takes him out for a root beer float and he confesses his motives, and Olivia seems to be on his side but not completely sold on the whole sanity thing. Their date is cut short though when that ball of energy materializes in the diner and causes some mayhem.

Olivia and Walter finally track down Subject 9 who isn’t too happy about seeing Walter again. It doesn’t take long to determine he isn’t behind the Angry Blue Ball of Light but Walter thinks he can help destroy it. Olivia puts a stop to that business when the ball of light takes the shape of the handsome young man from her dreams and the Angry Blue Ball vanishes…and Peter emerges from the depths of Reiden Lake. For those following along, Reiden Lake is where Peter died as a child…both Peters.

John and Anna acted the shit out of this episode. These two continue to amaze me every week with their range and how the smallest thing can make or break a scene. In this Peter-free timeline we’ve been treated to yet another version of our main characters and how they evolved without Peter in their lives. The differences are mostly subtle but there all the same. Walter is a bit more off center and less grounded and Olivia seems a bit softer, but still cold. Both the scene in the hotel room and the scene where Cameron James confronts Walter about what he did to the Cortexiphan kids were powerful stuff. It was interesting to learn that she has a past with Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) and that Nina and Walter are not at all friendly. With Peter back I wonder if we will get to fully explore the new shared history here or if things will be reset again. The Observer was watching when Peter was reborn from the lake after all.

Fringe returns next Friday on Fox.

REVIEW: Desperate Housewives “School of Hard Knocks”

The web of deceit and murder that our favorite Desperate Housewives have been weaving since Carlos killed Gabby’s pedophilic stepfather in the living room with the candlestick is starting to show the tiniest bits of unraveling. In “School of Hard Knocks” the seeds were planted for their big secret to be revealed and now it is just a matter of time.

Last week’s dismal episode made my brain hurt but I am willing to admit that perhaps I was being too critical. While I felt the Susan/Carlos moonlight walk of seduction was endlessly silly it did show that the two of them are having a hard time dealing with the emotional fallout of their post-dinner party tomfoolery. Thankfully we moved on from that and now Susan (Teri Hatcher) is channeling her rage in a more creative and less-adulterous manner. Instead of moonlit walks with the sexy Latino (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) she has chosen painting lessons from one of her artistic idols, Andre Zeller (Miguel Ferrer). But Zeller is no pushover and is not terribly impressed with Susan’s toddler-centric doodling. He challenges her to go to her dark place and after a false start involving a nauseatingly melodramatic painting of a lonely tree Susan finally taps into the darkness inside her.

Zeller: “That tree is lonely like I am now that Oprah is off the air”

Bree (Marcia Cross) tapped into the dark side of her now ex-boyfriend Chuck Vance (Jonathan Cake) last week when she dumped him in an attempt to prevent him from getting too close to their murder party. Turns out she would have been better off distracting him with sex and cookies instead because now he is hell-bent on revenge for being “led on” and “made a fool of”. Bree barely has time to think about it though because her daughter Danielle (Joy Lauren) has moved home with her son in the wake of a divorce, one which Bree saw coming and wastes no time in reminding Danielle of her omniscience. To add to the drama Danielle is starting an internet business selling “exercise equipment” which is code for “sex swings” and when Bree finds out she loses her Pentacostal mind! We saw a bit of the old judgmental, holier than thou Bree this week and while she is guilty of making the same mistakes over and over in regards to her kids I was reminded that she has indeed grown a lot since Rex’s death. I have a sneaking suspicion that Bree will pay dearly for her role in the murder party now that a certain missing person’s file has landed on Chuck’s desk.

Someone who isn’t growing that much though is Lynette (Felicity Huffman) and I have lamented this fact until I cannot lament any longer. Lynette is deeply flawed and like she said last week she “mounts a relationship and beats it into submission” which means I am actually rooting for Tom (Doug Savant) in this. Maybe his flirtations with the gorgeous doctor at the health club will force Lynette to make some changes and win him back, but she has a ways to go. The fact that she used her daughter to spy on Tom just showed she is not ready. I did enjoy her scene with Renee (Vanessa Williams) at the booty Burn Ballet class. Funny stuff.

Gabby (Eva Longoria) had it easy this week. Her storyline was limited to a run in with the president of the PTA (Beth Littleford) who takes great pleasure in dealing out punishments for disobeying the drop off rules at The Oak Ridge School which makes Gabby late for her various body beautifying appointments. Gabby first tries to overthrow her reign via the PTA meeting but is thwarted. She then results to ignoring the exile she was placed in and winds up running Dana over with her Mercedes. First of all didn’t Gabby used to drive a Jaguar? Anyway, Dana is relieved of duty and appoints Gabby PTA president as punishment. This development should provide many episodes of endless lulz.

So where are we? Well, Mike and Susan are lovey dovey again and Mike (James Denton) seems almost relieved that he and Susan share a sorted past now. They bonded more deeply over crime. Bree has made significant progress in her relationship with Danielle but remains unaware that the Wrath of Chuck about to descend upon her. I think that comment she made to Danielle about “certain recent events” that made her realize she isn’t perfect may come back to haunt her. Danielle may love her mother but she is not above turning her in for murder.

Next week Susan gets naked again (groan) and Gabby has some trouble with a school event. Tune in to ABC Sunday at 9pm to check it out.
