Gael Garcia Bernal set to ride as Zorro

Following in the footsteps of fellow Latino Antonio Banderas, Gael Garcia Bernal has landed the coveted role of Zorro! I could not be happier for Gael whose worked I’ve admired since I first discovered him in 2000′s Amores Perros.

According to Variety who broke the news yesterday, the hunky Mexicano will don the famous cape and mask in the 20th Century Fox reboot, Zorro Reborn. They do clarify that this film has nothing to do with the original Zorro films starring the aforementioned Banderas, since Sony is making their own film about the masked outlaw–a prequel.

Don’t expect to see Antonio back for that one, not even a cameo! When I spoke to him during a Puss In Boots media event I asked him whether or not he had been asked to participate or if he even had any interest and he gave me a very firm “NO”.

Now for some juicy details on Zorro Reborn, which is being billed as “a futuristic reboot of the Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story’s Western themes. Garcia Bernal would play the Spanish swordsman as a masked vigilante bent on revenge,” according to Variety.

No word yet on what pretty lady will play opposite Gael, but I’m sure the won’t have a hard time finding someone spectacular to star alongside him.

Any thoughts on who would be perfect for the role?

  1. I have only recently discovered Gael Garcia Bernal. WOW! What a happy discovery that was. Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of viewing him in a film yet, but I hope to soon. I like to draw celebrity portraits. Stars-Portraits.com has posted one of my portraits of Gael with his Google images. I last saw it on page 10, but his images are frequently shuffled. "Jojemo"
