For the last couple of months, the sun has been absolutely unforgiving. As we get deeper into the summer, things are only going to get worse so before you step out of the house you need to be prepared with proper sun care products.
For a long time I believed that as someone darker complected that I didn’t really need to wear much sunscreen. Due to my ignorance, I went many years without protecting my skin and I fully regret that. Statistically, Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is spreading faster to Black and Hispanic women than their white counterparts due to too much exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun and an increased use of tanning beds.
In an effort to help women arm themselves against any form of skin cancer, Amway Artistry released Time Defiance UV Defense SPF 50 Ultra Facial Sunscreen ($56) for All Skin Tones last week. According to the press release, you aren’t only getting the power of sun protection but also to help reduce the appearance of existing dark spots, discolorations, and redness.
“There is a common misconception that darker-skinned individuals are not at risk of sunburn or skin cancer. Although those with dark skin won’t get sunburned as quickly, they can still burn and are still susceptible to UV-induced damage such as wrinkles, age spots, uneven pigmentation, and skin cancer,” cautions Rhonda Solberg, a scientist behind TIME DEFIANCE UV Defense SPF 50.
I wear it on its own when I head outside for a run and I’m not too concerned about applying make-up but when I know I’m going to be out and about and exposed to the sun, I wear it as a base to protect me against UVB/UVA rays. The sunscreen, though packing a high-level of SPF, is ultra light and water resistant.
