With a new baby at home, I have no idea how Brian Austin Green has the time to star and promote a new show, but I sure am glad to have him back on the small screen! I had the chance to preview his latest project, Wedding Band, ahead of a media call with him and his co-star Melora Hardin last week and I loved it!
Now you might think, Rosy, you are going to be biased because you had the biggest crush on Brian while he was on Beverly Hills 90210. You were also Jan’s biggest cheerleader on The Office, no matter how big the psychotic episode or her ill treatment of Michael Scott (Steve Carell).
And you might be right, but it takes a well written show to keep me coming back for more. The new TBS comedy is smart, funny, and kicks-off on November 10th, 2012 at 10pm.
The series follows four friends – three single, one married, all with day jobs – who escape their daily stress and responsibilities by playing “weekend rock gods” in Seattle’s premier wedding and events band, Mother of the Bride. Brian is the lead singer of the band and his bandmates are played by Harold Perrineau, Peter Cambor, and Derek Miller.
Wait a minute you say? Did I just say Harold Perrineau??!! THE Harold Perrineau who is currently playing one of the biggest baddies on Sons of Anarchy? Yes, the very same!
I found Mr. Perrineau’s work on Wedding Band to be exceptionally charming! At no time did I see the sinister Damon Pope. All I saw was Stevie, the bassist and session musician who has rocked out with major rock royalty and has the platinum records to prove it.
Melora stars as Roxie Rutherford, the president of Rutherford Events who hires the guys and ends up getting a little “too close” with one of the guys! But that is neither here nor there. Roxie is a tough-as-nails chick who knows what she wants and won’t settle for less.

Brian, why do you prefer doing comedy over drama?
“I love comedies that are real dramatic, with honest moments in funny situations. I like seeing people struggle through situations that are just absurd and laughing at them.
I feel like our show is written in a very serious way. We’re honest about the things that we do and our lives are just crazy enough that it’s entertaining and it’s funny. But it’s never setup, punch line, which is hard to do.”
Brian, your band on the show is really good! This is not like the Wedding Singer where the performers are a joke. Why did they decide to go this route?
“You know, we can play comedy songs, which would last only for so long. Or we can stick with the element of what the show is, which is to make this band honestly the most kick-ass wedding band anybody has ever seen. There’s comedy in that alone!
They’re a stadium style wedding band and you never hear or see anything like that. They have pyrotechnics and confetti cannons going off before they throw guitar picks out to the crowd!”
Melora, your character Roxie notices the band because of how different they are?
“They are, you know, they are. And that’s why she takes them on in the first place. And they care so much about the event in a whole other way than Roxie cares about the event. They are awesome.”
From your time on The Office, as well as with your work on Broadway, we know you have a great singing voice Melora. Will you be joining the boys on stage at any point?
“I sing in the show a couple times. Brian and I do a duet, and I do a version of Get Ur Freak On, which is a Missy Elliot song. It’s basically a rap song when she does it, and they turned it into a jazz trio for me, which is extraordinary.
I could have never thought of what they did. It was so brilliant.”
In episode 3 entitled, “College Days,” we get a special visit from your stunning wife Megan Fox! How did that collaboration come about?
“Honestly, she kind of stepped in and saved us at the last minute. There were a couple other people that they were discussing to bring into the episode at first and [due to] scheduling and timing it didn’t work out.
I had already spoken to my wife about the episode and kind of what was going on and she graciously said that if nothing else worked out that she would step in and kind of rescue us and she did. I thought she was great. I thought she kicked ass.”
“She totally kicked ass,” Melora added.
