JJ Abrams assembles all-star team to help worthy cause in Los Angeles!

With so many celebrities in the news for doing plenty of bad things, it’s refreshing when they make headlines for making a difference. Led by famed producer/director J.J. Abrams, a long list of celebrities and entertainment industry executives teamed up with veterans from every branch of the military and numerous volunteers on Friday, November 9th, 2012 at Universal Studios Hollywood to give back to the youth of the community.

Celebrities who gathered to fill backpacks sponsored by JCP with food to deliver to children in the Los Angeles Unified School District included longtime J.J. collaborator and friend Greg Grunberg, fellow director/actor Jon Favreau, Covert Affairs star Chris Gorham, Partners star Brandon Routh, and New Girl co-stars Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone.

After only about an hour and a half, the volunteers were more than halfway towards their goal and by noon, they were ready to put smiles on the faces of countless children. I was proud to have been one of the volunteers who worked hard to help everyone involved meet the deadline.

You don’t need to be a celebrity to get involved in a community project such as this. Check out The Mission Continues and Got Your 6, the two organizations who helped J.J. et al to make this project a reality, and find out how you can help.

“American Horror Story” celebrates Blu-Ray launch with Murder House Tour

Last night paranormal enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the Blu-ray and DVD launch of the first season of American Horror Story and to start off Halloween month, with a tour visiting some famous crime scenes in Los Angeles. Led by paranormal expert, Scott Michaels from Dearly Departed Tours, we were taken to places where some of LA’s most horrific murders took place. We also got the opportunity to visit the “Murder House” from season one of the FX Network hit, which it turns out has never had a murder committed in it.

During the tour we also learned that under California state law, property owners do not have to disclose whether or not a murder took place there after 3 years. So, fellow Californians, you never know what gruesome murders could have happened in your house…

After the delightful yet gruesome tour, we were taken into the theater at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to hear from some of our favorite paranormal experts. We got to hear a little from Scott Michaels (Dearly Departed Tours) as he told us some more stories of murder and hauntings. Then, one of our favorite mediums and world-renown psychics, Lisa Williams took the stage and shared with us a little about her life communicating with the other side. Not only was she funny, but she kept the crowd hanging off her every word with story after story of her interaction with spirits. Then, actor David Anthony Higgins gave us a sneak preview of the upcoming season plus we got the chance to see the pilot episode again.

What a great night and a great way to kick off the new season and the Blu-ray and DVD launch of American Horror Story season one. The night only left me with one question. How could there be so many murders at the “Murder House” if they are protected by ADT?

Season two, entitled American Horror Story: Asylum, is set to debut on FX on October 17th, 2012.

James Brolin cast as Joel McHale’s deadbeat dad on “Community”

For Community fans out there, of which I am the biggest, here is one thing to look forward to this upcoming season. With so much up in the air after the departure of creator/showrunner Dan Harmon, we’ve all wondered what is in store for the fourth season of this wonderful comedy. TVLine.com confirmed exclusively that Emmy and Golden Globe winner James Brolin has been cast in the role of Jeff Winger’s (Joel McHale) father!

Joel seems to be excited over this casting decision as he was not able to contain the news.  He set tongues wagging after Tweeting the photo above approximately four hours ago with the message, “On set at #Community with the great, terrific, & cool #JamesBrolin.”

Did he think we would not wonder why? Or did he do this on purpose to get people talking?

Here are the deets:

Multiple sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Community has cast the Emmy winning acting vet as Jeff Winger’s estranged father. He’ll make his debut in quirky NBC comedy’s Thanksgiving episode.

We know Jeff has had issues with his father since he abandoned him when he was a child. He even nearly beat Pierce (Chevy Chase) to a pulp when he pretended to be his father! During the season three finale, we see Jeff showing interest in finding out about his father, but why is he back? What role will he play in Jeff’s life? Will Jeff accept him back? How long will he stick around?

So many questions to answer and we have months yet to find out the answers! Don’t forget to tune in to the season premiere of Community on its new night, Friday October 19th only on NBC.

Cast of “Sons of Anarchy” participate in ‘Boot Ride and Rally’ to help soldiers

The only thing better than Sons of Anarchy returning for a fifth season on September 11th is getting a chance to meet them all, up close and personal. SAMCRO was in full force in Hollywood for the 2nd Annual Boot Ride and Rally held at The Happy Ending Bar & Restaurant on August 26, 2012 in Hollywood, California and I was there in the middle of all the action. It was great talking to Jax (Charlie Hunnam), Clay (Ron Perlman), Opie (Ryan Hurst) and the rest of the Sons, and seeing them giving back in support of our troops. Theo Rossi (Juice) and Kim Coates (Tig) greeted the crowd and shared their connection to the troops and the Boot Campaign. (To learn more about Boot Ride Click Here)

Even though SOA creator Kurt Sutter wasn’t anywhere to be seen, his presence was most certainly felt. Cast members played coy about potential storylines for their characters and in regards to the show in general! I think the general sentiment can be best summed up by Emilio Rivera (Marcus Alvarez), “You’re not gonna get much from me.” One thing he could share was (regarding SAMCRO) “We’re friends right now and I’m alive so I’m happy about that.”

Perlman was just as vague letting us know that his character,“Clay may or may not try to take back an alpha role within the club.”

Thankfully Maggie was a little more open about what we can expect from Tara this season. “She really is stepping into a powerful and more aggressive position and doing what she has to do to protect her children and protect her club.” While Maggie doesn’t think Tara will be the new Gemma, “she’s (Tara) taken a few lessons from Gemma for sure.” Maggie also shared that one of the ongoing themes this season will be the power struggle between Tara and Gemma, “that extent to where they need each other versus being antagonistic with each other.”

Opie, having gone through so much in season four, goes into season 5 “he’s sort of had enough with everybody in the club and has to reconcile whether he wants to stay in the club or not” according to Hurst.

Coats, shared that this next season “Tig’s off the leash now, I have no loyalties anymore except to the club. Tig’s confused, he’s angry, he’s upset.”

Theo Rossi’s main claim for his character is that “everything has its recourse. What goes up must come down.” Rossi raises one of the most important questions this season, “Will Jax turn out like John Teller or will he turn out like Clay Morrow?”

I think the general consensus is that this season will be crazier, more explosive and more intense than season four. I know I am personally counting down the days til the season premiere. If you want to re-live the drama of season four, the DVD/Blu-Ray is out in stores tomorrow. Click here to purchase

Don’t forget to tune in for an all new season of Sons of Anarchy, September 11th, only on FX.

Community: In the battle between Troy and Abed, who went home the winner?

Asking someone to choose between Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi) is like asking someone if they want to eat sushi or pizza. How can you really choose? Well, this is exactly what Community has asked us to do, choose. Troy’s blanket fort or Abed’s pillow fort?

In episode 13 entitled, “Digital Exploration of Interior Design” (Part 1) we saw Troy and Abed get into an argument over whether they should build a blanket or pillow fort and go for the Guinness World Record. Alliances were formed, best friends pitted against each other, and last night we saw the conclusion of a violent and bitter war.

Narrated by Keith David, this episode was a post pillow fight documentary, including interviews and footage from the battle. We revisited the making of New Fluffytown, Abed’s pillow fort, which was like crawling through a hug. When a Guinness World Record opportunity arises, Troy wants to go for the record and Abed thinks it’s dumb. This all leads to Troy’s secession and their eventual first encounter, later named The Study Room Kerfuffle.

The Dean (Jim Rash) tries to get Jeff (Joel McHale) to be a mediator between the two parties, but talks at first are unsuccessful. Not even imaginary friendship hats seemed to work! The study group is divided.

No resolution is reached and Troy gives Abed an “all tomato” (like ultimatum, get it?!). The deadline to reach an agreement comes and goes, and thats when the feathers really fly! Abed employs Pierce (Chevy Chase) to build a new weapon and Troy counters by calling on Greendale’s Chief of Security, Ben Chang (Ken Jeong). Chang in turn recruits a gang of preteen security interns, aka the Changlorious Bastards. The carnage caused by the Changlorious Bastards leads to Abed unleashing Pierce as a Marshmallow Man looking weapon made of all pillows.

Jeff continues to try and make peace between Troy and Abed with little success.

Two and a half days into the war, Dean Pelton announces that the Guinness representative is fired and will not visit the school, essentially ending the war. The war continues, but only between Troy and Abed, and it goes on for hours. Finally Jeff convinces them to wear the imaginary friendship hats and peace is restored.

(Cue cheers and clapping!)

This is by far, the best episode since the return in my opinion. Formatting the episode like a PBS documentary was a risk that paid off. Initially when I heard about them building another blanket fort, I thought it would be lame but this two-part story was a breath of fresh air. The found footage, the voiceovers, the still photos all made for great episode. Now, I continue my one-week depression that will eventually be fulfilled next week with another episode of Community.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Anna Paquin step out for College Television Awards

Nothing could have pleased me more than to be on the red carpet at the College Television Awards on Saturday, March 31st. Not only was I proud of my fellow students for being honored for their achievements in video, digital and film, but I also celebrated my birthday alongside some of my favorite stars from the small screen.

The College Television Awards is a national competition recognizing excellence in college student-produced video, digital and film work. Hundreds of students from across the country entered into the contest and this years winners were feted at a black-tie gala held at the Renaissance Hotel Hollywood in Hollywood, California. The students were presented their awards by celebrity presenters in various categories such as animation, comedy, drama, and more.

Serving as hosts for the evening were Franklin & Bash stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer. Amongst this years presenters and guests were Anna Paquin from True Blood, Paul Blackthorne from The River, Eliza Coupe and Zachary Knighton from ABC’s Happy Endings, British beauty Cat Deeley, Tony Hale (Buster! from Arrested Development), and Lamorne Morris from New Girl.

My personal favorites of the night were Lamorne Morris, who claimed co-star Kali Hawk wanted to sleep with him, and Zack Morris, who didn’t hang around for too long because he had to attend to his hosting duties. All the stars offered the young and hungry students some nuggets of knowledge about the industry to help them out with their future careers.

“Stay true to yourselves,” Tony Hale told students about being an up-and-comer in the entertainment industry. “This business sometimes wants to put you in a mold and what’s setting you apart is yourself and what you bring to the table.”

So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deely added:

Work hard. I don’t think there are any shortcuts. I think its about working hard, preparing, and then enjoying the moment. Be in the moment.

Amongst the nights first place winners were Nicholas Dixon and Bree Evans in the comedy category for “Mr. Bellpond”, Julio Ramos in the drama category for “Carrerita, Doctor! A Doctor’s Job” and Dawn Schwartz in the documentary category for “World on a String.”

I’m looking forward to seeing this years winners become next years directors, producers, writers, and actors.

Portlandia is getting ready to Wiig out!

As if Portlandia wasn’t a great show already, this Friday it gets even better with Kristen Wiig guest starring in a three part arc. In this scene, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are Gil and Merrill, members of a struggling rock group who become viral sensations with the addition of their newest member, Kevin the Cat (yes, he’s a cat). Wiig portrays their slightly obsessed fan Kathy, err, I mean Gathy, with a G. Whatever you do, listen to Gathy because she knows how to handle a weapon. What did Pink do to Gathy to make her this way?

Wiig’s odd character name reminded me of her guest appearance on one of the best shows ever, Flight of the Conchords! There she played Brahbrah, owner of a missing “pepileptic” dog named Charlie, and love interest to Bret (Bret Mckenzie) and Jemaine (Jemaine Clement).

Turns out Charlie had actually been missing for six years! Sorry for the spoiler.

Make sure to catch Armisen, Brownstein, and Wiig on Portlandia this Friday, February 10 at 10pm on IFC.
