Back before Anne Rice wrote about Jesus and angels she wrote about really awesome stuff like omnisexual vampires, bipolar Egyptian queens and horny witches. Like most of the world I preferred her earlier material because I’m a dirty heathen. I haven’t read anything of hers since The Blood Canticle to be honest and I did a little jig when I heard she had renounced the church and plans on writing a werewolf novel. Can I have an amen!
Of all her earlier works my all time favorites have been the books about The Mayfair Witches. Oh sure the fair haired Lestat and the twinky Louis certainly were fodder for many a pleasant dream but Rowan Mayfair and Lasher stole my heart. I won’t lie though, it was a tough sell at first. I tired three times to get into The Witching Hour, which is roughly the size of the Bible and reads a lot like it for the first 100 pages with all the thous and arts and page after page of who begot who but once I finally broke through I was a changed man. Their tale spans three books; The Witching Hour, Lasher and Taltos and were further expanded upon in Merrick, Blackwood Farm and The Blood Canticle. In the years since their publication I’ve begged and pleaded with He Who Makes the Rules to please bring this series to life on a screen of some sort, big or small. NBC tried a few years ago but for whatever reason abandoned the project. I was crushed. For a long time I hoped Showtime or HBO would pick it up and I heard Showtime considered it but again…nothing came of it. I shook my fist in despair. Despair I tell you!
Now there are rumblings and whispers that James Duff, co-creator of the TNT hit The Closer has conjured up a deal and hopes to bring the series to life, perhaps on TNT. Anne Rice herself confirmed this rumor on her Facebook page recently stating;
“Yes, James Duff is certainly trying to do this, and I’m totally behind him on it and want to see it sail.“
There is certainly enough material to fuel a full series for at least a few seasons, perhaps more if they take the source material and run with it like HBO did with that sassy Sookie Stackhouse. Nothing “official” has been said though so it is too early to get TOO excited about this. That won’t stop me from trying to come up with my dream cast. Who do you think should play Mona? Rowan? Lasher? I’ll be up all night trying to figure this out. In the meantime you should find a copy of The Witching Hour immediately and give it a read. You won’t be sorry.
