Jennifer Hudson comes back a winner to American Idol

The girl whose career rocketed to stardom after NOT winning ‘American Idol’ is returning to the series that voted her out. Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and singer, will reportedly be making a special appearance on the highly-popular FOX series. The Associated Press reports that someone close to the show revealed she will perform not live, but in a taped segment to appear in an upcoming episode. @ NY Daily News

It’s amazing the year that Jennifer Hudson has had. The Super Bowl, the DNC, some weird BET Award, etc. Unfortunately in her mind, I’m sure it may also be her worst. I think Idol has realized this season that big name stars alone were not going to bring back their ratings to astronomical heights. I see this as not only a marketing tool for former Idol contestants, but also Idol’s way of bringing back old characters much like they do on soaps. Don’t ask me how I know that. Here’s the Star-Spangled Banner vid from this year’s Super Bowl, I know you’ll enjoy it.

American Idol lines up “American Boy” Kanye and “Idol Queen” Kelly!

‘American Idol’s’ 13 finalists (and viewers) are in for a treat on tonight’s show.

During this week’s elimination show , not one, but two Grammy winners are expected to take the stage – Kanye West and the original ‘Idol’ Kelly Clarkson.

@ NY Daily News

Admittedly, I’m not watching Idol this season. Why? Not really sure. What I do know, is that it’s pretty smart for Kelly Clarkson to nurture those roots in the midst of a new album release. Many of the Idol winners (including Kelly) have tried to distance themselves from the show once they’ve acquired their music careers at times which I’ve always felt was stupid of them to do so.

On the other hand, I’m completely puzzled by the enlistment of Kanye West to perform. First, let me say that I do own and enjoy many of the songs from his new album. Although, he’s a rapper, not a singer. Also, he’s become quite fond of the now overused Auto-tune thanks to him and fellow rapper T-Pain. On that basis alone, I think this takes away from the legitimacy of actual singing talent which is trying to be created through the Idol franchise, and encouraging techniques used by those less talented.

Regardless, it will be a great episode to watch these two great performers take the stage on one of the biggest TV shows of all time.

Now if I could only figure out what the fascination with this Adam guy is, I might start watching again.

Fantasia Barrino: You go girl!

fp_1276989_fp_idol_arrivals_87_0521082009 is THE year for “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino!  Not only has the 24-year-old lost 20 pounds but she has decided to hit the books and earn her high school diploma!

“I’ve been talking about it for so long,” Fantasia told E! ‘s Marc Malkin earlier today. “I have a lot of young people who look up to me, like my 15-year-old brother and 7-year-old daughter. It’s something that I really need to do and that I want to do.”

Fantasia who caused a bit of controversy during her days on Idol partially because people considered her a poor role model for youth is making those people eat their words. She says she got tired of waiting for other to make things happen for herself, so now she wants to be in control.

“I had to sit back for awhile and had to get some things settled,” she said. “I had been with a lot of people not doing what they said they were going to do. I didn’t have time to sit back and cry. I didn’t have time to go to a mental health counselor. I had to keep my s–t on straight—excuse my language!—and handle my business, because it’s not just about me. It’s about me and my whole family.”

You can see more of Fantasia when she hits the red carpet for the Grammy Awards this Sunday. Fantasia and her bff Jennifer Hudson are up for an award for their duet, “I’m His Only Woman.”

David Cook: Coming to a college near you!

davidcook

“American Idol” winner David Cook is taking his show on the road! He will be visiting colleges across the nation, he announced today.

The 37-date tour starts on February 13th at Florida State University and end up at the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 25.

David was adamant about doing the college shows because he finds it nostalgic.

“There’s something inherently nostalgic about playing college shows. So many amazing acts used to do it, so it’s nice to be able to bring that ideal back, in some small way,” Cook said.

Hello Kiddies! Here’s my second edition of this week’s new music releases that may be worth checking out before your favorite radio station plays it until your ears bleed. If there’s a song on here that I missed, it probably wasn’t worth reviewing, but you’re more than welcome to drop me a line in the comments section and I promise to check it out. If I actually missed it that is.

Keep in mind that I review songs that might be hitting the radio very soon. I know there’s tons of great unknown/non-commercial/unsigned artists, but we’re trying to appeal to the masses here. Again, if you submit it in the comments, I’ll check it out and reply or maybe even do a post on it. Thanks!

  • Fall Out Boy: America’s Suitehearts
    • Very cool song from FOB; I like the harmony hits (which for some reason remind me of Maroon 5) throughout the song even though the song is a bit slower than we’re used to hearing from these guys. This song’s not going to get you jumping around like their previous hits, but it’ll definitely get you rockin’ out in your car.
  • Framing Hanley: Lollipop
    • Imagine Fall Out Boy doing a cover of Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop. Nothing revolutionary here, but I’m a sucker for rock covers of rap songs.
  • Melinda Doolittle: It’s Your Love
    • American Idol fans, get excited!! Finally a song from a former Idol contestant that doesn’t automatically get tossed in the Top 40 “junk pile”, with the exception possibly being Daughtry. Here’s a great R&B song with that throwback sound that’s pretty popular right now (Duffy, ugh; Winehouse, yay!) and it fits Melinda Dolittle beautifully! It definitely rings of that great Motown sound, especially with the strong back-ups (which are also probably Melinda). This won’t have much shelf life on Top 40, but your Adult Contemporary and R&B stations are going to eat it up.
