Once upon a time (1959 to be exact) there was a Disney villain so fabulous that all other villains hope to be here when they grow up. Behold Maleficent, self proclaimed Mistress of All Evil from Sleeping Beauty! This fierce bitch could turn into a dragon people. A dragon! Who cares about that sleepy blonde chick and those tiny old ladies she hangs around with? Snow White’s evil queen could only wrinkle herself up and make nasty apple pies and spent the rest of the movie being outsmarted by seven lil nuggets. Ursula the Sea Witch came pretty close to matching Maleficent’s flair for the dramatic but she couldn’t quite work the hat.

So, my pets, when Disney first announced that not only were they making a live action tribute to this bastion of ferocity and glamour but that Queen Diva herself Angelina Jolie would be donning that magnificent hat I was ALL IN. The word from Disney is that production began last week and now we have a glorious image of Mistress Angelina in all her hellacious glory to wet our appetites.

Yes please. I’ll be having more of this.

Maleficent is the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain and the circumstances that led her to curse poor baby Aurora to a lifetime of slumber. Oscar-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar) is directing and Linda Wolverton (Beauty and the Beast) wrote the screenplay. The movie is scheduled to be released March 14, 2014.
