Dallas “Truth or Consequences”

This week on House Hunters: Texas that big white ranch called Southfork finally got a new owner, and it wasn’t who anyone was expecting. And now poor Ann had to unpack everything she packed up last week because Bobby isn’t going anywhere and he’s pissed! Dallas continues to surprise me while at the same time feeling enough like the old show to make me feel all tingly inside. They’ve covered in five episodes more drama and lies and scandal and barbecues than it would have taken a full season to cover in the 80s. Dallas 2012 moves fast so pay attention, and if you enjoy drinking games then I suggest taking a shot every time someone utters the phrase “birth right”.

This week picked up right where we left off with a teary eyed Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) spilling her guts to Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) about all the mischief she has been up to with her “brother” Tommy. I am still not convinced those two are actually siblings, but I could just be paranoid. She tells Christopher that Tommy sent the email that broke he and Elena (Jordana Brewster) up which doesn’t sit too well with him. He then stomps off and adds some excitement to the world’s most boring barbecue by punching Tommy in the face and speeding off in his sensible yet sexy Tesla. Bobby (Patrick Duffy) wastes no time in throwing the conniving duo off the ranch, but this won’t be the end of Rebecca. I smell a bun in the oven. Christopher wastes no time in kicking her out of his life and before too long he has hit the bottle and is banging on Elena’s door. I would have never guessed that Christopher would end up being the drunk in this family. He’s more Ewing than he realizes. At least he had enough sense not to show Elena the sex tape of Marta and John Ross.

The big news this week was JR’s takeover of Southfork Ranch. JR (Larry Hagman) played that perfectly and made things even more complicated by putting John Ross (Josh Henderson) in charge and then skipping town in typical JR fashion via a helicopter at Cowboy’s stadium after having his face blasted on the jumbotron. Go Cowboys! Get that homerun, or goal or whatever! Can you tell I don’t follow sports? Shocking I know. It is worth mentioning that when I was a small child I fancied myself a Cowboys fan because they had glamorous cheerleaders and it angered my Atlanta Falcon’s fan mother just a little bit. Dallas is in my BLOOD people!

So now John Ross is in charge and he doesn’t look like he has a clue what to do. JR did say he was going to throw him in the deep end just like Jock did to him and see if he can swim. But Christopher has enough info on him to send him to jail if he doesn’t come clean about the fraudulent sale of the ranch. Imagine how pissed JR would be if he came home from his little vacation to find that all his hard work has been undone by his son. At least he has Elena for comfort.

Another interesting development this week was the tense meeting between Bobby’s wife Ann (Brenda Strong) and her creepy ex-husband played by Mitch Pileggi! Welcome aboard Agent Skinner! Something nasty went down between those two and I have no doubt we will find out exactly what before too long. Also Ann looked SMOKIN in those tight jeans and high heels. She did get him to agree to pull his oil trucks off Southfork in order to delay the drilling until Bobby can figure out how to fix things.

Another week and the stakes continue to get higher and higher, and the good news is that Dallas has been picked up for a second season! What did you guys think?

Dallas “The Last Hurrah”

It is almost moving day at Southfork and Bobby (Patrick Duffy) has left his poor wife Ann (Brenda Strong) to not only pack that entire house into six boxes but also plan the last barbecue on the ranch…the “Last Hurrah” if you will. “Everyone who has ever set foot on Southfork” will be there and it’s up to Ann and Carmen to throw it together on this week’s episode of Dallas. You can bet this means a cameo or two from some old cast members. I get a little spoilerish below so proceed at your own risk.

All the alliances and plots that we saw in the premiere are starting to fall apart. JR (Larry Hagman) took the snow globe that contains Dallas and shook it. Now it is anybody’s guess where the flakes will fall, and by flake I do mean The Pill-popper Formerly Known as Marta. John Ross is about to learn just how hot that mess is now that he has betrayed her by spraying his hose at Elena. Her real name is Veronica and she is…prepare yourself for it…BIPOLAR! (cue music). This means of course that she could go off at any moment because we all know bipolar people are CRAZY and untreatable! Expect to see her on the roof of the barn with a rifle soon.

JR’s return to his old self from the near comatose state we first saw him in just two episodes ago is a wonder to behold. What was he doing up in that nursing home anyway? Had someone removed his batteries? He looked like he was one bowl of Jello away from death until John Ross (Josh Henderson) walked in and told him Bobby was selling Southfork. Now he’s a steaming locomotive ready to take back his birthright and step on whoever he has to on the way. That’s how I like my JR. I really enjoyed the moment he shared with Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) in the dining room over coffee. The only thing missing there were some shoulder pads and some bourbon. Why was she asking John Ross if JR had really changed? Is she looking for a way back into that family now that Ewing Oil is on its way back to the top? If she runs for governor it could be very convenient for JR. He’ll have to deal with Cliff first.

John Ross’s attempt to deal with the blackmailing lawyer Mitch Lobell didn’t go so well and JR sends him off to track down Lobell’s son Rick (Jason London) and lure him back to his drug taking whoring ways. Taking a cue from his daddy John Ross tries to blackmail Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) into doing it by threatening to tell Christopher her dirty secret. But Rebecca is a gentle flower and can’t go through with it. The verdict is still out on Rebecca for me. I can’t decide what to make of her. Thankfully for John Ross his second girlfriend Veronica is unstable enough to do what it takes. Poor Rick Lobell.

John Ross isn’t the only Ewing with two women enchanted by his charms. Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe) is torn between two lovers and feeling like a fool after finding out that Elena (Jordana Brewster) dumped him based on an email he thinks John Ross sent. John Ross thinks Rebecca sent it and has the IP address to prove it, but she is denying it of course. On top of all that he has that methane project he’s working on, and I don’t mean the one he’ll start after he eats all that barbecue and baked beans. It was nice to see Bobby step up and offer some sound advice on love to his son even while elbow deep in a cow’s uterus. Way to multitask Bobby. You’ll need those skills when JR swoops in to take Southfork out from under you. At least Ann found Miss Ellie’s silver for you. I’d check it before you leave though. JR probably lifted a knife or two from that box when no one was looking. Unfortunately Christopher interpreted his father’s advice to “make a choice” as “be a complete douchebag to Elena” and tried to pay her off for helping him with his methane problem before sending her back to the kitchen. I suspect that little stunt will come back to haunt him.

So the big barbecue to bid one last farewell to Southfork turned out to be a bit of a letdown. I hate it that Ray and Lucy have been reduced to mere party guests so far. I know we have to make room for the new generation but I’d love to see some vintage Lucy and find out what she’s been up to. John Ross invited Elena to be his date and then showed up dressed as Han Solo. And before he got a chance to tell Christopher what his wife has been up to Rebecca stepped in and started to spill the beans…about something. We aren’t sure exactly what she says or who she blames for the email. Do you think it was really her that sent it? Or was it her brother Tommy? We’ll have to wait till next week to find out.

REVIEW: Dallas “The Price You Pay”

“Real power is something you take,” JR explained to his son before sending him off to dig up dirt on that sleazy lawyer of theirs, and he ain’t lyin. The opening scene of this week’s episode of Dallas had him holding a razor to John Ross’s neck because of course that is how JR would handle it. That is what John Ross gets for trying to pull one over on his daddy, for “drillin a dry hole” and for still calling JR “daddy” at his age. After you reach twenty Dad is the only acceptable term…or maybe Pop. Now that JR and John Ross are in cahoots I suspect things will get very sticky very soon.

It was another fine week for Dallas. I love that Ann Ewing (Brenda Strong) always seems to have a firearm close by. I fully expect she will pull a rifle on poor Carmen the next time she over starches Bobby’s (Patrick Duffy) shirts. JR’s (Larry Hagman) comment about “bullets not having much effect on him” was a great comeback. I still get a little thrill out of actually seeing her on screen and not just hearing her voice narrating the action like she did for 8 years on Desperate Housewives. She’s the only one Bobby can really and truly trust.

What a nice surprise to see that Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) was able to find work as shady Venezuelan businessman Vicente Cano after getting killed dead by Jack Bauer. Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t find him to be very threatening during his battle of wits with JR over the deal to buy Southfork. The poor guy just doesn’t realize who he is dealing with. The only advantage he has is that JR is 110 years old. Maybe once the deal is done he can afford to buy some scissors and trim his eyebrows. They are practically another character.

How cute was it that Bobby was more concerned about hair loss than heart failure as a possible side effect of the cancer treatment. He always did have good hair. I wonder if we’ll see him in those short bathing trunks he used to wear any time soon. I was disappointed that he caved so quickly and sold Southfork when faced with John Ross’s (Josh Henderson) threat to tell the world what he read in The Secret Diary of Ellie Southworth Ewing. I don’t know about you all but I’d pay good money to read that shit. Publish it! Make it an e-book download from the Dallas site! Come on people!

The highlight this week was the return of Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval). The long-time nemesis of the Ewings and Pam’s doting brother made his debut this week and I for one would have liked it to be a bit more…DALLAS. He runs Ewing Oil now! A far more fitting introduction to this pivotal character would have been behind JR’s old desk with his feet up and a shit eating grin on his face, not making a play for Southfork in Bobby’s office on enemy turf! I know it is 2012 but dammit, Cliff deserved bigger. He could have at least ridden in on a horse or arrived via helicopter or something. JR stole that scene easily with his “I do recognize the smell of brimstone and crazy” comment. I’ll be adding that little gem to my personal stash. It was a comeback worthy of Karen Walker herself. (Imagine HER on Dallas!)

The love triangle between Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe), Elena (Jordana Brewster) and Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) heated up a bit more this week when it was revealed that it was Rebecca who sent the email that split the two love birds up and opened the door for her to make her power play. I like her more and more now that she is so tortured and emotional all the time. Nothing good will come of her betrayal of her creepy ranch hand brother Tommy…if he is even her brother at all. This may turn into a love hexagon before too long. Kudos to Christopher for being so darn nice after he locked lips with Elena in front of Southfork after being told his Dad has cancer. Like any good southern boy he ran home to his woman and confessed his true undying love for her. Sadly this won’t last.

I missed seeing Sue Ellen this week. Hopefully she will be back soon. I also noticed that Pam’s name came up a lot in conversation which makes me hope/wish/wonder/pray that Victoria Principal might take a break from selling her beauty secrets on QVC to reprise her role. Pam isn’t dead after all, and Victoria has had enough plastic surgery to explain her appearance being altered by that fiery explosion she was involved in. The episode could be called “The Pam Principal”.

Dallas is back next Wednesday at 9pm on TNT, and if you aren’t watching Dallas Roundup at TNT.com after each episode then you are really missing out. Last night Patrick, Jesse and Jordana discussed Christopher’s love life and what Southfork means to them. It was great fun!

Dallas is back and it’s like it never left

“Blood is thicker than water, and oil is thicker than both.” The premiere of TNTs Dallas laid it on thick this week and completely won this fan’s heart.

I feel I must forewarn you. I have been at Defcon-4 since the reboot was announced last year so TNT was going to have to work really hard to get a bad review out of me for this premiere. JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen could simply walk into the room and give each other knowing glances and I’d rate it 4 stars. If the show is terrible it will probably take me 3 or 4 episodes to realize it, so bear with me. I am not the most objective person in the world when it comes to nostalgia. My eyes are clouded with the soft, backlit, Vaseline covered haze of the 80s.

Dallas is one of the tent pole shows from the 80s that really define my youth and along with its spin off Knots Landing were the only shows we really watched together as a family each week. It is hard to separate the Ewings from the 80s. They were always around, mostly acting crazy and making questionable moral (and fashion) choices. Literally hundreds of characters rotated in and out of that white house, but at the core it was the story of embattled brothers JR and Bobby and their struggle for control of the family legacy that drove the story. Fast forward twenty-one years and the story is the same.

Admittedly, a large part of my giddy glee during the premiere was just being so damn happy to see that opening sequence in all it’s HD glory and having so many fond memories come flooding back. Thanks to the success of the original series Southfork Ranch remains virtually unchanged since the 80s. Some clever camera angles and some CGI pastures hid the visitor parking lots and the Dallas museum from view, and some remarkable set design that included a full-size replica of the interiors carefully matched to the familiar layout and updated with 21st century furnishings and fixtures. Never mind that the interiors don’t come anywhere close to matching the exterior of the home since a different location was used originally. We can forgive little things like that. But fantastic sets and nostalgic title sequences can only carry a show so far. It could have easily fallen apart as soon as anyone started speaking and I was prepared for the worst. But fifteen minutes in I felt a grin creep across my face and knew that all was right and good with the world. My Ewings were back and it was a GLORIOUS thing.

What I loved about the old show was how over the top and melodramatic it was and TNT has embraced the shit out of that heritage. Patrick Duffy, Larry Hagman and Linda Gray stepped effortlessly back into those roles and it was a joy to watch. I totally believed where their characters ended up 14 years after War of the Ewings. Bobby is still the moral compass and Sue Ellen is still a fierce bitch, albeit a sober one. And seeing JR sitting in the Home for Sad and Lonely Old People just made his reawakening at the end of the first hour that much more satisfying. Don’t poke the sleeping snake. It was also good to see Lucy (Charlene Tilton) and Ray (Steve Kanaly) at Christopher’s wedding and I hope they get some more screen time. And I really look forward to the return of Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval).

The basic premise of this new series is that Jr and Bobby lost Ewing Oil to rival Cliff Barnes. Bobby returned to Southfork to run the ranch and JR apparently lost his mind and wound up in a home. Now their sons, John Ross and Christopher are looking to put the Ewings back on top and have very different ideas about how to do so. Throw in a love triangle or two and some backstabbing and it’s game on at Southfork Ranch.

I was mostly impressed with the new batch of Ewings. Josh Henderson bugged me a little with his bad Texas accent and strutting around like an extra on Gunsmoke but by the end of the first hour I was totally ALL IN with his portrayal of John Ross. Of course JR’s son would be a nightmare of arrogance and betrayal at the age of 33. Anything else would have been disappointing.  Jesse Metcalfe’s Christopher made a nice contrast to his cocky cousin but it took me a while before I was able to shake his Desperate Housewives character from my head. Nice to see he is still fond of wandering around shirtless. Speaking of Desperate Housewives, it was nice to see Brenda Strong acting ON camera for a change as the new gun-toting matriarch of Southfork. As for the younger ladies I loved Jordana Brewster’s saucy cook’s daughter Elena Ramos. Julie Gonzalo as Christopher’s new wife Rebecca didn’t do much to win my heart but I’m willing to see how she plays out.

The two-hour premiere which included the episodes “Changing of the Guard” and “Hedging Your Bets” was full of great moments and some really great quotes. The one that really made me glow with happiness and nostalgia though was the big showdown at John Ross’s forbidden oil rig in the far reaches of the ranch. Hearing Bobby utter the phrase “I promised Mama there would be NO DRILLING ON SOUTHFORK” conjured images of Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie and took me right back to 1987 again. But then John Ross had the GALL to respond with this:

“Isn’t it about time we stopped caring about Miss Ellie’s precious wishes?”

I am not lying when I tell you that both myself and my partner said out loud “Oh no no no…that will not do.” John Ross had better watch his dirty little mouth or he might wake up to find Miss Ellie’s ghost standing at the foot of his bed with a shotgun and a disappointed look. Anyway, I didn’t need any further proof that I was completely invested in this new Dallas. JR’s comment later on that his son should “Never pass up a good chance to shut up” and his realization in the closing moments of episode two sealed the deal.

The Ewings are indeed back yall, like a stampede of longhorns. Everybody is scheming everybody and screwing everybody else and it is just getting started. The first mini-season is set to run ten episodes and I assume if it does well then it will return next summer. Catch it Wednesdays at 9pm on TNT. Not doing so would be downright unpatriotic.

Ashlee Simpson and Jordana Brewster heart Ronson

It was a star studded affair for fashion designer Charlotte Ronson, with stars like Ashlee Simpson, Jordana Brewster, and Nicky Hilton came out to celebrate the I “Heart” Ronson and JC Penney premiere of The I “Heart” Ronson summer collection held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on June 21, 2011 in Hollywood, California.

Highlights from the event include Ronson’s Striped Linen dress from the line which is currently available for $34.99 here, Nicky Hilton’s adorable braided hair do, and the show of sibling love from sister Samantha Ronson who dj’ed for party goers.

As part of the official launch, Charlotte tweeted via JC Penny’s official account with style advice, a look at her studio and look at her day to day activities on June 20th. So even though you won’t be able to take part since the date has since passed, feel free to click here and check out what went down.

More Stars Join TNT’s “Dallas” Reboot

The cast of the anxiously anticipated (by me at least) reboot of the hugely popular 80s drama Dallas on TNT is filling up fast. Last week Larry Hagman confirmed that he had a verbal agreement to return as JR Ewing and was waiting to sign the contracts. Now more of the original cast is confirmed and some new faces will be roaming the halls of Southfork Ranch.
