Spartacus: Vengeance: Is Mira going to battle Ilithyia? Katrina Law speaks!

This season on Spartacus: Vengeance, the character of Mira has grown into a much larger role for Katrina Law. The Jersey Girl spent quite a lot of time training with the boys very early on in shooting, leaving her as the sole female in the gladiator camp.

But don’t feel bad for her. Ask me what I wouldn’t do to spend all that time with men like Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah and of course Dustin Clare!

I spoke with Katrina this week about the uncertainty of her characters relationship with Spartacus, her relationship with the females in the rebel camp, and how the dynamic shifts between Crixus and Spartacus when our boy Gannicus makes his triumphant return!

In talking with her about the evolution of Mira’s relationship with Spartacus, she gave us a little insight as to what is currently going on in her head and at what moment she got a reality check.

I think Mira’s foundation got rocked a little bit by Chadara (Bonnie Sveen) in episode two. I think she was pretty solid [up until then], she thought things were going a certain way before Chadara. I think coming into season two, she was pretty sure things were going a very specific way, the way she wanted it to.

She never expected to replace Sura but she thought she was getting a good deal with Spartacus.

There are moments when there’s little bubbles of goodness between the two of them and the outside world constantly seems to come in and poke holes into that bubble. Mira’s keeping the faith because she has these moments with Spartacus that are just so pure and genuine and real.

So I think right now she’s just questioning whether or not things are actually the way that she sees them because she suddenly got the point of view from the outside world and it doesn’t quite match up with how she saw the relationship.

Throughout the season your going to see her first fighting to see what her role is as a newly freed slave on her own but then also what her role is with Spartacus and whether or not he actually loves her.

“It’s possible that the relationship may not last and as of right now I think its being questioned by everybody; whether or not Spartacus has anything left to give, whether or not he actually is capable of it, or whether or not he is using Mira.

And whether or not Mira truly loves him or if she just latched on to the first thing that was available.

I think its just one of those big open-ended questions of “is it going to last?” because its not a guaranteed things such as anything in this world.”

So while she could not give me any details about which way the relationship would be going as the season advances, she did promise we would know for sure by the end of the season.

“Yeah you will, its a definite ending and I think its going to be good.”

This of course made me think of my friend Johan’s question for Katrina. Will Mira and Spartacus make any babies?

“Dun Dun Dun……it won’t be for a lack of trying if there isn’t.”

Last week I spoke to Katrina’s co-star Ellen Hollman who will debut her character Saxa during episode seven. Ellen said she “didn’t like Mira at all!” when she first arrived in Camp Spartacus. So I wanted to see what Mira was thinking when she first met Saxa.

When Mira walks back into the rebel camps and she sees all these new German rebel slaves that have been brought into it, everyone just kind of thought, “who are these diseased, mangy looking people?” Saxa was just one of the few.

I think in a sense Mira really respects Saxa because when she comes onto the scene she has been trained as a fighter and Mira had to learn the hard way as a necessity. In that regard she really respects the woman for being able to hold her own in a fight but at the same time she thinks Saxa is a little aggressive, uncouth, and a bit mangy. (laughs)

I don’t think she hates her but I think she is a little worried as to what she stands for in the Spartacus camp but then again she doesn’t even speak English so Mira can’t really communicate with her.

So this is when things start to get good! (maybe!) I know that Saxa has a thing for Gannicus (who can blame her right?!) but I wondered if Mira considered any of these women to be a threat to her relationship with Spartacus.

I think if anybody were to come up to Spartacus and try to take him, whether it be Saxa or anyone, I think Mira would have a say in that and would definitely put up a fight.

The statement is not so big on its own but when its paired with her answer to my next question, could mean a lot! I was curious as to what Mira’s interaction would be with Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) and Ilithyia (Viva Bianca) this season.

She doesn’t really interact with Lucretia at all this year but there is going to be a really interesting scene coming up with Ilithyia sometime in the near future. So its gonna be good and I can’t even tell you anything about it because anything that I would say would be a spoiler!

It’s gonna happen and its gonna be good.

We KNOW little Miss Evil Bitch Ilithyia has been enjoying the flashbacks of her sexy time with Spartacus every chance she gets! Do you guys think Ilithyia will be crazy enough to make a play for Spartacus?

This is purely speculation but what else would Ilithyia and Mira have in common?

Finally, I had to throw in a question about Gannicus out there purely because I enjoy talking about him! Crixus and Spartacus have gone from hating each other, to putting up with each other, to mutually respecting each other.

With Gannicus back in the picture, how will this dynamic change?

At the beginning of Vengeance Spartacus and Crixus are at odds . They are trying to figure out where to go, who’s gonna be the leader , what their agenda is, so you see them kind of duke it out in episodes 1,2, and 3 and it continues on in episode 4. Gannicus does come back in episode 5 and by that point Crixus and Spartacus have found a very tumultuous, happy medium and their fine with that. Then all of a sudden Gannicus comes back and everything is up in the air again! So it basically starts all over again. He causes a big stir in the gladiator camp and questions a lot of things and puts a lot of questions to people too.

So much going on, this show really needs to run at least two hours each week! Katrina has a guest starring role coming up on CSI:Miami and a new film entitled, The Bodyguard. We will makes sure to keep you guys posted on that!

Tune in to an all new episode of Spartacus: Vengeance, Friday nights at 10 pm only on Starz.

‘Spartacus’ star Liam McIntyre: “Who doesn’t need love deep down?

With only nine days left before the highly anticipated premiere of Spartacus: Vengeance, we are happy to bring you another interview (click here to read our chat with creator Steven DeKnight) with members of the fantastic cast! This week I spoke to Liam McIntyre, Lucy Lawless, Viva Bianca, and Peter Mensah about the action-packed second season and all the drama that comes with it.

When we left Spartacus in season one, he finds a potential love interest in Mira (played by the beautiful Katrina Law). I asked Liam whether or not there was potentially a “love” growing between Spartacus and Mira this season, and whether or not that was even possible after all the pain he suffered after the loss of his wife.

“Who doesn’t need love deep down? That is very true of everybody. That was a great thing to get to play with all year because in season 1 Sura said you will never love another person and thats kind of like a truism for Spartacus’ existence. So he now has the problem, which is the real problem for everybody who falls under those horrible circumstances, can you ever love again?

I think Spartacus certainly wants to and he’s going to try but I think it’s a very difficult thing for him to try.…not even move on but move into any relationship.

It’s a constant struggle throughout the season.”

I know a lot of people see this show and automatically think about the sex and violence that takes place, but what stands out to me the most is the relationships between the characters. One of my favorite pairings is that of Spartacus and Crixus (Manu Bennett).

At first they loathed each other but then they teamed up and used their mutual hatred for the House of Batiatus to bring about its demise! When season  two premieres, they are each leaders of their own rebel groups who are fighting against the Romans.  You learn quickly that, very much like brothers, Crixus and Spartacus of each others backs.

“It’s one of the greatest parts of the season, Liam said.  All the big dogs on campus, I guess all the alpha males of the ludus have a very difficult journey even just trying to get along because of the nature of who they are. So with Crixus and Spartacus there is a desire to work together but it dovetails and splits apart throughout the season and that’s true about other characters that appear in the rebel camp that are very powerful characters.

Part of the battle that Spartacus has is to A) want to lead them and B) find a way to do that and actually unify people. Until this day I still don’t understand how one man managed to unify so many different cultures and creeds into one cause. I don’t know if its ever been done before or since.”

Speaking of relationships, there is the also the odd combo of Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) and Ilithyia (Viva Bianca) who after all that has happened you would imagine have nothing left to say to each other. But due to circumstances far bigger than either of them, they must unite as one.

I asked Lucy whether or not her character finds out about Ilithyia’s bad intentions?

“Or does she find out mine? I don’t want to give you too much, but needless to say Lucretia and Ilithyia continue to have a very forged relationship. Which is Lucretia has worked very hard to make Ilithyia care about her again or at least need her because Ilithyia just wants her dead.”

Very early on in the season we learn that Ilithyia is with child and I wondered if this would make Lucretia even more crazy after the loss of her child.

“Lucretia’s lost everything she’s even lost her marbles so that is the least of her worries.”

Viva also gave me a bit of insight into the relationship between her character and Lucretia.

“With regards to Ilithyia and Lucretia, what’s so interesting in season 2 is that because of the circumstances in which they’ve both landed they are forced into a situation of becoming a lot closer than they even were in season 1 which means the potential for drama and the unravelling of relationship revelation is so much more interesting.

So really there is a lot in store for this female relationship.”

Don’t quote me you guys but I have a feeling that things might get a little romantic between these two girls! Lucy hinted that “love” might find her character again and with all the hints provided it seems that with Ilithyia in the situation she finds herself she might need some attention and affection since her husband isn’t really providing much.

But the big question of the season is (ok one of the big questions!) who is Ilithyia’s baby daddy?!

“That is why you have to watch Spartacus: Vengeance! That is the big question on everyones lips, Viva said.

Lucy Lawless: Lucretia with a turkey baster!
(laughs)

Viva: “Thats the mystery, but all will be revealed eventually”

Finally, the fabulous Peter Mensah spoke a bit about the feelings that his character Oenemaus is going through at the start of Spartacus: Vengeance. We get to see some snippets of his early days in the House of Batiatus and how he came to be Doctore.

I felt like his character was feeling a bit conflicted or embarrassed that he had gone against the very people who gave him position but Peter explained what was really going on in his mind.

“I think actually it wasn’t so much embarrassment at aiding the rebels as that he was caught between making the right decision at a set point in time which led him into a no win situation.

He knew what was going on in at the House of Batiatus ultimately was wrong so in the moment he assisted and did what he thought was the right thing and it kind of led him in to a no mans land.

Then the question becomes if you have nowhere to go what do you do with your life? And I think that is the biggest question he faces as the season starts. Not having an affiliation to anyone in particular..not necessarily believing in the cause, if there actually was one, he has to figure out what to do with his life.

So this season is a journey that he undergoes to understand and find a place in the world.”

Next week I will be chatting with the beautiful Katrina Law, who plays Spartacus’ love interest this season. She is getting some nice camera time with our boy Liam, so stay tuned for the juicy details.

Don’t forget to tune into the season premiere of Spartacus: Vengeance on January 27th, only on Starz.

‘Spartacus’ creator Steven DeKnight: “Gannicus returns in an unexpected way”

Ever since the first episode of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena aired, I fell instantly in love with the character of Gannicus. Yes Dustin Clare is real easy on the eyes, but it was the evolution of the character that really captivated me.

I’ve been trying to get Steven DeKnight, creator of the Spartacus series, to give me some spoilers as to how my beloved gladiator meets Spartacus during the new season, but he won’t budge! Today I had the opportunity to chat with Mr. DeKnight and though he refuses to ruin a juicy plot point, he did tell me this about the return of Gannicus.

Rosy: Could you tell me under what circumstance Gannicus makes his first appearance this season?

S. DeKnight: That would be giving away too much! I can tell you he comes back in a very unexpected way. It’s not what you would think.

One of the things I wanted to do from the start is that our band of heroes are not Robin Hood and his merry men. They have a lot of problems internally which is very historical because they kept breaking up into different groups away from Spartacus.

I can’t say when Gannicus comes back but it’s not a happy reunion. There are definitely a lot of problems that come with it.”

I have had the chance to preview the first two episodes and so I do want to give you all a big SPOILER WARNING in case you don’t want anything revealed. I will give away anything too big but in case you want to learn anything about what is coming up then this would be the time to check out one of our other fabulous stories!

Based on the previews released by Starz, you already know that Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) has survived the brutal attack by her former lover Crixus (Manu Bennett) though not with all her marbles. At first we don’t really know how on Earth she has made it this far all on her own.

The only evidence of her attack is a scar on her belly, which she seems absolutely clueless about until Ilithyia (Viva Bianca) points it out during their first meeting. So what can we expect to happen between these two this season?

S. DeKnight: Ilithyia and Lucretia, which are my two favorite characters to write; especially when they are with each other, they continue their “friend dance,” in a very convoluted unexpected way. What happened between those two is not what you would think is what is going to happen especially based where we left them at the end of season one.

They are in fine form, they really paint that storyline in an amazing kind of way.

Now before I go into talking about Liam McIntyre and his portrayal of the title character, I want to talk a bit about his relationship with Mira (Katrina Law). When the season opens, we see that she and Spartacus are still very much together. But as Mira continues to fall for the broken hearted gladiator, is there even a chance that the intensity of her feelings will ever be reciprocated?

S. DeKnight: Mira, as we left her in season one, she really responded to Spartacus and was falling in love with Spartacus. But Spartacus [inaudible] towards her but I wouldn’t call it love. Where we move with them [this season], they have moved into a quasi-relationship but its a relationship that is very bumpy and rocky and it may or may not work out in the end.

As far as Liam McIntyre and his portrayal of Spartacus is concerned, I think fans will embrace him wholeheartedly. He definitely captures the essence of what Andy Whitfield brought to the character while adding his own uniqueness to the mix.

The passion, the intensity, and the humanity are all present in his performance.

S. DeKnight: We never wanted to duplicate Andy, that will never happen. He was such a singular, amazing talent. But we wanted to find somebody that had the same base qualities of compassion.

I told all the actors in the audition, even though Spartacus might fly into a rage now and then, he never comes from a place of anger its always from a place of a wounded heart.

And we felt that Liam captured that essence.

It was announced last year that Mr. DeKnight had been signed to a two year exclusive deal with the Starz Network and since then we hadn’t really heard much more. I asked him whether this deal only pertained to his work on Spartacus or if the deal would potentially give us something new.

S. DeKnight: It doesn’t just pertain to Spartacus. I’m actually, at the moment writing a new project for Starz. It’s super, extra, crazy top secret, I can’t even give you a title. But there is something new in the works.

Something in the really early stages, it has not been greenlit. There are many, many, many hoops to jump through and stages to pass before its greenlit and announced as a show.

But its big and very, very exciting.

Don’t forget to tune-in to a whole new season of Spartacus: Vengeance beginning January 27th, 2012 at 10 pm only on Starz.

P.S. As an added bonus, I have a video interview I did with the cast from Comic Con that I hadn’t released yet. It’s part one of two videos and was edited months ago. I don’t want to hold back on the release of the interview any longer but understand that there might be questions about Andy Whitfield on there since it was done before he sadly passed away.

If you guys like it, I can quickly edit the actors who were not on this video due to length into a second part. Let me know!

Spartacus stars Manu Bennett and Katrina Law kick it with Nylon

I really hate to pick favorites since I’ve not had the chance to meet every celebrity on the planet, but Katrina Law and Manu Bennett did emerge as faves after interviewing them at Comic Con. (video coming soon!)

The Spartacus stars stepped out for the NYLON August Denim Issue Launch Party held on Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. The playful Katrina rocked a leather jacket, black satin skirt and sexy sky high silver heels while her buff co-star Manu opted for a comfy tee over a pair of fitted jeans (oh my!) and riding boots.

As previously mentioned, we got some nice scoop about the up coming season of Spartacus: Vengeance. 2012 will herald the arrival of a new lead, played by Liam McIntyre. Starz has some pretty great things coming up with this series, so stay tuned!
