Meryl Streep premieres ‘The Iron Lady’ in London

Looking beautiful in a black Stella McCartney dress and navy blue Lindsey Thornburg coat, Meryl Streep hit the red carpet at the UK Premiere of The Iron Lady held at the BFI Southbank in London, England on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012. She was joined by co-stars Anthony Head, Jim Broadbent, and mega-hunk Tom Hardy.

The biographical drama tells the story of Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.

The double Oscar winner confesses in an interview on the red carpet what it felt like to play this role.

“It was extremely daunting, because I’m from New Jersey,” Streep said in an interview ahead of the event. “And yet as an outsider, I felt something of what she might have felt.”

The Iron Lady opens in theaters on January 13th, 2012.

If you’re any older than 25 than you might have an idea about the fact that Meryl Streep can actually be pretty funny! Then again, she could be just an incredibly well rounded actress, which I’m sure not many would debate. Her career has been on fire over the past few years, but I think an appearance on 30 Rock would certainly bring her even more so to the mainstream. Most of the movies she’s made lately have been chick flicks, so until a few weeks ago I hadn’t seen The Devil Wears Prada but I don’t think I’ll be subjected to Mamma Mia unless there’s some nookie as a reward afterwards. I honestly can’t wait to see Doubt but that’s mostly because of my appreciation of Philip Seymour Hoffman in just about any movie. Given 30 Rock‘s track record of guest stars, this wouldn’t surprise me as some figure-heads putting some feelers out there to see if it’ll work.
