Some people like to celebrate “birthday months” so I figured I had every right to celebrate Torchwood: Miracle Day premiere month for all of July! Following suit is Radio Times, the British version of TV Guide who is dedicating an entire week to the show as is evident by their hot!hot!hot! new cover featuring returning cast members John Barrowman and Eve Myles.
I had the chance to view the premiere episode last week and I want to assure folks that have not watched the first three seasons that you can begin with Miracle Day no problem. But you WILL be so intrigued with the history of the Torchwood Institute and the mystery behind Jack Harness (Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Myles) that you might find yourself hunting down episodes and maybe even some Doctor Who to get all caught up.
For folks who have been following the show, the storyline is re-introduced in such a way that you won’t feel like its being repetitive.
The episode opens with Gwen and Rhys Williams (Kai Owen) playing with their daughter at their secluded home in Wales. They have attempted to live a normal life now that Torchwood no longer exists but when the world is taken over by a phenomenon that prevents anyone from dying, it bring people right to their front door looking for answers.
New characters are introduced including convicted pedophile and murderer Oswald Danes (played by veteran actor Bill Pullman), Rex Matheson (played by Mehki Phifer), and Esther Drummond (played by Alexa Havins). All three American actors are affected by this strange phenomenon in very different and interesting ways.
Both old and new characters will come together to try and find the secrets behind Miracle Day and how Torchwood is linked to it all. If no one ever dies but people still age and get hurt, it will only be viable for the human race to survive four months!
Not to mention Captain Jack seems to have turned human when bruises appear on his body that do not heal. It’s a race against time, and I’m excited to see how the ten episodes look to resolve this issue.
Check out this behind-the-scenes video below to prepare yourself for Torchwood: Miracle Day, which premieres on Friday, July 8th, 2011 at 10 pm only on Starz.
