This year’s Oscars might ROFL.

LOS ANGELES – Judd Apatow is coming to the Oscars — and he’s bringing a new film.

The comedy writer-director-producer, whose screen credits include “Knocked Up,” will unveil fresh material on stage and on screen during the Oscar telecast on Feb. 22, said show producers Bill Condon and Laurence Mark.

They said Apatow and his work will appear during a tribute to comedy.

Hey! The Oscars might actually be funny this year!! Or at least part of it. It seems like no matter who hosts, whether you’re a fan of Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, or (insert comedian name here), you can tell they’re in major comedic pain when hosting the Oscars. In comes Judd Apatow, the now A-list producer/writer/director of just about every really funny movie over the past 4 years has been tapped to create a tribute (a.k.a. time-filler) to comedy featuring some of his very own stuff and comedy classics. You have to give this guy MAJOR credit. He’s helped make Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Jonah Goldberg, and Will Ferrell the comedic A-listers they are today. As a matter of fact, I’d be pretty disappointed if they weren’t involved in this tribute. Let’s see how many pot references they can squeeze in.

Take A Leak: Eastbound & Down (w/ Will Ferrell)

Will Ferrell makes a full-time return to TV as executive producer, co-writer, and co-star in Eastbound & Down with up-and-coming funny guy Danny McBride. You might recognize Danny from Pineapple Express & Tropic Thunder, both which were big hits last year and seemingly a new member of WF’s Funny or Die crew. EB&D is already done filming and ready to go over at HBO. WF and HBO is sure to be a dangerously hysterical combination judging from what he’s already gotten away with at FoD and the ultra-tease from the HBO site (above). The mullet sported by the main character Kenny Powers (DMcB) is already priceless. For some reason, my immediate reaction was “I didn’t know Mike Piazza could act!”. No offense to Piazza, but I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what he would look like if he hadn’t made it to the MLB. Fittingly of course, since the show is about a washed-up baseball player still trying to earn his golden ticket to the majors.  The fact that any sport is involved leads me to hope that there will certainly be some physical comedy, which I would expect nothing less from the Talladega Nights/Semi-Pro/Spartan cheerleader genius that is Will Ferrell. Powers’ roid-rage in the trailer above makes me want to punch a hole in my wall with anticipation. I haven’t been this excited to have HBO since The Sopranos.
